"Shop with a cop" is so close to the vibe of "abusive dad buying himself out of a bad conscious with his kid" that it reads like a pointed sketch about flailing interventions to really severe problems. Its literally "I'm an abusive presence in your life, and the only way I can smooth over those complicated transgressions is through pointless commerce."

The problem from the FT canape-fiend's point of view is that it is not necessary to spend £100 on a bottle of it before it gets drinkable, as per champers*. I'd say it's middle-class rather than trashy, and maybe more specifically millennial middle-class female. It has made my life better, and probably shorter. * Side note: British slang words that end in '-ers' are usually Etonian in origin, rather like the people who go to Deloitte's christmas parties.
