from what I heard she had ideas for I think 7 storylines, but only really planned on the 4. it got to be very difficult to film and budget because it was very popular and the fans were a bit disruptive when filming. locations would leak and stuff and it was time-consuming and expensive to try to keep going, also some of the actors had taken on other projects and not resigned contracts... like the actor who played William, for instance. In the end, I think she was happy with the 4. I think she planned on selling the rights eventually and hoping they would continue the story which some versions have done, but she sold it with very strict instructions on how they were allowed to make remakes and who was allowed to be the main characters. Maybe she didn't trust someone else to write the storylines she imagined? I'm not sure. If I got any of this wrong, please correct me, it's been a while since I heard the original plans so I might be misremembering.
