2025-04-02 01:51:57 +0000 UTCnot sure if iβll finish before the month is over but i really liked the first half so here is my unqualified review to me, this is a quintessential depiction of what itβs like to be a young girl growing up in america. there were so many little details in adinaβs childhood that were like mine, from having a list of reasons to convince her mom to let her get her ears pierced to adinaβs specific observations of life as a girl in middle/high school (βperformed sloppiness is a feature of beautyβ and βif she believed the boardwalk t-shirts, a woman was a ball or chain, someone stupid youβre with, someone to lie to so a man can drink beer. if she believed television fathers, women were a constant pain, wanting red roses or a nice dinner out. if she learned how to be a girl from songs, it was worse. if she learned from other girls, worse still.βπ§π§) to her confusion surrounding whatβs socially acceptable and whatβs not. and although my relationship with my mom is a lot better than adinaβs and her mom, there were still so many things in their dynamic that made me feel so seen, like when she visits her momβs work and realizes that she has a life outside of adina. and this scene when she and her mom are at the aquarium: βshe places her ear against the cool, thick glass. ooo moo a moo a, the water says. she hears: mom, mom, mom.β i donβt even know how to explain why that one hit me so hard, you either get it or you donβt ! in summation, i think we need to get greta gerwig on an adaptation of this book.

2025-03-30 17:49:36 +0000 UTCβ thereβs a reason it's called alien-ated , because i am an alien , i am alone . when you are alone , there is no one to tell - there is a bird whose call sounds like hoo-where-la-hoo ! or , thereβs a spider landing on your head . so you tell yourself . thereβs a spider landing on my head . i should move . β this book felt like a parallel memoir of my own life written in prose . i have never related to a character more - it is almost beyond β relation β as it simply feels like we are one entity . ( the only difference being that i would have probably been so in love with toni ) from her childhood - being called β sensitive β by the adults in her life , to her early romantic experiences and how they came to make up her feelings surrounding her sexuality . ( ex: β she cannot explain why she doesnβt want to have sex with him . or why , when they have sex , she feels like sheβs wearing a turtleneck three sizes too small β ) to being in the β gifted β program at school but still experiencing debilitating challenges , it taking her β longer than other children β to learn how to blow her nose ; right down to β playing it for laughs β when she feels inadequate , her first flight being to salt lake city , and her italian heritage - i feel so incredibly seen . itβs just makes you go - β wow there are others like me β at the same time as alina herself realizes it , and i do feel like that was the intention of this novel . overall , i will always hold a special place in my heart for the way it has made me feel and i hope that its underlined pages burn a whole in every bookshelf i ever own . β a little girl should not retreat so often into thought , a space a mother cannot breach , no matter how many times she calls her name . β ALSO p.s. i can't believe shawn correctly guessed and revealed my legal name on the patreon like that, but yeah you can call me meredith ... i guess ...
