Over the weekend I spent some time putting artwork up in my apartment that I've bought over the past year or two and recently had framed. None of it is the originals because I'm definitely not a rich man. But as I finished putting it up I realised I've ended up with images from nearly all my favourite artists and photographers.
My apartment has a large empty wall opposite the kitchen and I've hung everything on that wall in one of those eclectic mismatched kind of gallery hung styles which I've always loved and it's a mix of two photos of me that a friend took where you can't recognise me, a couple of Warhol images, a Herb Ritts image, a Max Dupain, two Jeffrey Smart prints and some other bits and pieces. In my bedroom I have three Bruce Weber images and a Ross Watson print.
These are all artists that I have long admired. Some dead, some living, but all inspirational to me. It got me thinking about who else I would want to own and the answer was clear as day, James Houston. He's an Australian photographer who I believe has now retired after living and working in New York for years but a huge inspiration. Enormous. He has influenced me more than anyone else living or dead and it would be a huge honour to have one of his images on my wall.
It does feel like I need to find one of his prints, preferably an original. Maybe one day.
