The story behind Windswept

This shoot was possibly the most uncomfortable a model has ever been on any of my shoots.

Sam was coming to town from the other side of the country and wanted to collaborate. He's a performer and all-round lovely guy who also happens to be very good looking so of course I said yes. The trouble was, it was getting very close to Winter. It may have officially been Autumn but it was a very, very brisk morning. Why did we choose an outdoor shoot? I didn't have access to a studio easily at the time and Sam had done mostly indoor/studio shoots up til that point as well. So it made sense to do an outdoor shoot. Apart from the temperature.

I had scouted a new spot to do a shoot which looked great but as the title suggests there was a bitterly cold wind coming off the water. Sam was a trooper though and lay on freezing cold rocks, stood in the bitter wind and looked great doing all of it. I'm sure the golfers on the golf course 100m away wondered why anyone was nude in that weather but they didn't say anything.

The only time Sam complained was when he had to get wet. That part of the shoot was definitely over very very quickly. It was a miracle he was in focus he was shivering so much.

In photography we talk about colour temperature and that is very much related to real scenarios. Winter light is different to Summer light. Cold weather looks different. So I leant right in to that with the editing, really emphasising the cool tones in the images. The end result was really strong I thought.
