If you speak to any photographer of the human form, I'm fairly sure every one would express some frustration at the constant need for new locations. It's a challenge that never ends. Back in 2012 I photographed Jeff in an abandoned factory in a nearby suburb. Sadly that factory has now been knocked down to be developed. For several years it was well known, if a little difficult to get into.
It was known to be very popular with graffiti artists to practice their craft, and gay men to practice their... craft as well. Thankfully we had the place to ourselves when we went. Looking back at this shoot there are some serious technical issues which I've now learnt how to avoid. The low light in the building was a major factor in those issues and my lack of experience with that scenario is clear, at least to me.
Jeff was a champion on this shoot. He is also a photographer these days. As you can see, he was in great shape and wanted a record of that. I know with any skill, we learn as we go and we learn from experience but when I look at some old shoots like this, I cringe about some of the mistakes I made but overall I quite like some of these images, particularly the portrait at the top with the slash of light across his face.
