A few days ago I shared a video of an old shoot I did in a parking garage in the middle of the night. This shoot was the first time I collaborated with Kieran, also in the middle of the night. This time we had settled on the idea of shooting at Bronte Beach ocean pool, a very popular place for a swim during the day and, we discovered, in the night. We did the shoot at the very tail end of summer on an unusually cool night.
Anyone that knows anything about photography will know that the one thing that is crucial, the most fundamental thing about photography, is light. Shooting using just the available light from one floodlight shining on the pool was a risky venture and I needed to have the shutter open for 5 seconds at a time. That is usually only ok when you are shooting something completely still. A naked man in a cold pool in the middle of the night is not completely still. Poor Kieran was an absolute trooper though.
Despite the technical limitations of this shoot, the images have always had a great response from viewers. Personally I love the eerie cool colours of the water and the ominous lighting. The full download is available directly from my website and it will be released here on Patreon at some stage.
