Where it all began

My love for photography was instilled in me by my father who used to follow my sister and I around with a camera when we were little and develop the photos himself in a home darkroom.

Many years later, in 2004 I worked up the courage to ask someone to pose nude for me. Did he know what he was doing? No. Did I know what I was doing? No. Sure, I knew how to work my camera (an old 35mm film Mamiya) but I didn't know how to make a model feel relaxed and comfortable in front of a camera. Nor did I know how to direct a model either.

Ultimately this grey day at La Perouse nudist beach lead to some images which I'm still proud of to this day. Are they my best work? Of course not but it was the start of something that I have become very passionate about and that has brought me a lot of opportunities over the subsequent 16 years.

When photographers start shooting nude figures, most of us don't have a studio that we can use so it's a very viable and affordable option to photograph people on rocks in isolated or nude-friendly areas like this. It is a well worn path for newcomers and even those of us with several years experience still shoot in locations like this. The combination of the human form in nature, against the immovable solidity of rocks has become a classic for a reason. It's beautiful.
