千夜がカストレアの街で働き始めて、数週間が経った。
Several weeks had passed since Chiyo started working in the town of Castrea.
酒場兼ギルドの仕事にも慣れはじめ、配膳も皿洗いも、今では元気にこなしている。
She had grown used to her work at the tavern-slash-guild, handling table service and dishwashing with cheerful efficiency.
だが、そんな中でも──
Yet even so—
ふとした瞬間、会社のこと、家族のこと、日本での生活が頭をよぎる。
At quiet moments, thoughts of her company, her family, and her life back in Japan would surface.
(……あの扉が、また開くことってあるのかな……)
("...I wonder if that door will ever open again...")
そんな未練を、千夜は夜になると酒でごまかすようになった。
To dull that lingering longing, Chiyo began relying on alcohol at night.
ヴァルトに隠れて、酒場の余り酒をちびちび飲んでいることもしばしば。
More than once, she would sneak sips of leftover drinks behind Walt's back.
「なにしてんだ、酒臭いぞ」
"What are you doing? You reek of booze."
「……ちょっとだけ、です……！」
"...Just a little…!"
千夜の事情を知っている街の住人たちは、あえて何も聞かず、彼女を温かく迎え入れてくれた。
The townspeople who knew of her circumstances chose not to pry, instead welcoming her with warmth.
「最近疲れてない？たまにはうちに来なよ」
"Feeling tired lately? Why don't you come over sometime?"
「このワイン、ちょっと特別なやつなんだ。千夜ちゃんにも飲んでほしくてさ」
"This wine’s a special one. Thought you might like to try it too, Chiyo-chan."
そんなやりとりが重なるうちに──
As such moments piled up—
千夜は気がつけば、知らない天井の下で朝を迎える日も増えていた。
Chiyo began waking up beneath unfamiliar ceilings more and more often.
男女それぞれの部屋。ふたりきりの夜。寄り添うように眠る温もり。
Rooms of both men and women. Nights spent just the two of them. Warmth shared as they slept side by side.
すべてが、優しくて、少しだけ、寂しさを紛らわせてくれた。
It was all gentle… and helped ease her loneliness, just a little.
「……ふふ、またやっちゃったな、私」
"...Hehe, I did it again, didn’t I..."
千夜は、ぐしゃぐしゃの髪を手ぐしで直しながら、朝日を浴びて微笑む。
Running her fingers through her messy hair, Chiyo smiled under the morning sun.
「でも……悪くない、かも。」
"But... maybe it’s not so bad after all."
