I remember watching a youtube video explaining the subtle but important differences between this and the old version(I think it was Big Joel). Especially the way they play the song 'a boy like that' truly shows the gravity of Maria's choices and how she is currently defending a guy that is a bad person. It is so much more sympathetic to Anita and her perspective. It is also way more realistic about the sharks vs jets feud. In that it is not, as in the Shakespeare play it's based on, "two houses, both alike in dignity". Because the sharks and Jets aren't both alike in dignity. The Sharks are Puerto Ricans trying to survive in a racist country, and the jets are those racists.

2024-11-12 11:26:16 +0000 UTCI’m glad you decided to watch this version, it’s much, much better than the earlier film in my opinion. Also I love that the actors do their own singing and the Puerto Rican characters were actually played by latino actors. The only Puerto Rican in the cast of the first film was Rita Moreno (Anita in that version, Valentina in this film). Ariana DeBose won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this performance, and rightfully so. Which made her and Rita Moreno the only two actresses who have won an Oscar for the same role, since Moreno took home the statue for the 1961 version. There are two pairs of actors who have done the same as well - Marlon Brando and Robert DeNiro both for playing Vito Corleone (in ”the Godfather” trilogy), and Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix for playing the Joker. I think this was Rachel Zegler’s first film role, and she knocked it out of the park. I really think she’s getting so much undeserved hate online, primarily from anti-sjw idiots. She’s a great actress and singer, and whatever decisions were made with the live action ”Snow White” they were not made by her. She and the actor playing Chino (Josh Andrés) actually fell in love on set and are as far as I know still together. He was in the latest ”Hunger Games” movie, too, playing Snow’s ”friend” Sejanus Plinth. Fun bit of trivia, Rachel Zegler was named after Rachel Greene on ”Friends”.

You should watch that one if you have the chance Not done with the video and don’t know if you realized it but it’s a retelling of Romeo and Juliet The lady from docs drug store played Anita in the previous version The song “I feel pretty” is from west side story! It’s it so many other movies and shows because the song was so popular. They were indeed rival gangs
