Hey, all! Welcome to August. Here's your monthly update.
First order of business is always the scan of the month. Already announced on Twitter (I will not be calling it "X") and Bluesky (oh yeah, we have one of those now, it's https://bsky.app/profile/kinekovideo.bsky.social if you want to follow!) and sent to eligible Patrons, the premium raw scan for the month of August is both the opening and ending themes for Sea Cat, a film we uploaded in association with LonelyChaser fansubs some time ago, and one with an interesting story.
There was *almost* a chance to scan this years ago. Someone else had gotten a film copies a few years ago and sent it to a scanner with a very... questionable reputation. For almost two years, all they sent back was a low-quality test scan & they ignored requests to send back the actual reel. It took a few of us in the archival/preservation community and step up to get the reel back, and they got their scan, but decided not to release it.
Everything was back to square one at this point and nothing else could be done until a 2nd copy showed up for sale months ago. That is the copy used for this release.
You can see it here, with more information regarding its production in the description. There's also a download link in the pinned comment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pakbyuffUc&t=371s
If you want the raw scan of the OP/ED, be sure to upgrade to a Purr-servationist this month only!
Now, on to the juicy stuff. Stuff only you get to see and no one else. I'm talking about new stuff we've gotten to preserve.
Recently, up for auction was a good amount of mostly TV anime on 16mm on prints that seem to be in pretty good condition, especially in the color department. We set out to collect as many of these as we could and ended up with the following:
Patalliro! - Episode 16 - "The Legend of Diamonds"
The Three Musketeers - Episode 16 - "Hurry up, D'Artagnan!"
Hello! Sandy Bell - Episode 5 - "Escaped Prince"
Dokaben - Episode 53 - "Ah! There are tears in the laurels"
My Daddy Long Legs - Episode 4 – "A Distraction of an Entrance Ceremony"
Science Fiction Saiyuki Starzinger Movie
Images of each one in order are attached at the top of this post, from the original auctions. As you can see they all look quite good, aside from Dokaben which has a bit of color fade, and Starzinger which is quite faded and looks quite beat up. Keep on the lookout because we might be releasing some of these (or at the very least, the OPs/EDs) in the future!
And thanks to your support, we were able to pay the hefty shipping fee to get these films from rotting and into our hands to preserve them. As always, thank you very much for your support, and stay tuned for more content!
