We Scanned Another Rare Anime on 16mm!

On February 9, 1983, Fuji Television broadcast an animated TV special produced by Toei called "Don Matsugoro no Seikatsu" (The Life of Don Matsugoro). The special revolves around a talking dog named Don Matsugoro and his family. Mr. Matsuzawa is a novelist who lives in Chiba Prefecture. Only his daughter Kazuko knows that the family dog, Don Matsugoro, can talk. Don is wounded in a fight with the neighbors' dog, King, a nouveau-riche mongrel with ideas above his station. At the vet, however, he falls in love with a little patchwork puppy called Chotaro.

This special only aired once in 1983 and was never released on home video to this day, making it a very forgotten snippet of animation. It survived thanks to a Betamax capture of its initial airing, but now we've scanned a 16mm print of it courtesy of @nappasan on Twitter, whose friend let us borrow the print for scanning.

Doesn't it look great? We've uploaded a few frames with comparison to the old Betamax capture, the only surviving source of this special before this brand new 16mm scan. And you Patrons get to know about it days before Twitter will see this comparison! For Patrons in the $10+ tier, we'll upload something even better later on!

We currently have no plans to release this special, due to the print belonging to someone else, but if that changes in the future we'll be sure to let you all know here first!
