At about the third or fourth run in to somebody you don't know, you can just walk past of repeat the head nod. They will likely not be offended. The self checkout stations mostly are for convenience(like the 10 items or less line). Sometimes a person may have just one or two purchases and Americans really hate waiting(typically, there are exceptions) and so the self checkout is to get people moving out faster. **Country Fried steak with brown gravy is amazing, btw
