Poll: Object Compendium Packs

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to get some more feedback from the community, this time about the way we organise our compendium packs.

Currently, we have two packs for physical objects in A5e: one for mundane adventuring gear and one for magic items. I'm very much considering merging these into a single large pack, but I wanted to hear from the community before making a breaking change like this.

How would you prefer things to be organised?

There are several reasons. 1) It's what the D&D 5e system does. This may not seem like the best reason, but there are two parts to this: a) It makes the system more familiar for people who transition to A5e. b) It means I don't have to manually sort the mundane and magical items into two packs when we convert the 5e item compendium 😩 2) All too often, we see users unable to find something, because they're looking in the wrong pack. This happens all the time with potions, because they're listed in two different places in the books, and not wanting to maintain two version of the same documents, we have to choose where to put them. While it would clearly be better not to have to make that choice at all, it sounds like we at least put them in the right place, as people are using the Adventuring Gear pack as a general store, and potions of healing should probably be available there. 3) Related to the above, people don't seem to get what the Adventuring Gear pack is even for. We get people coming to the system (quite possibly from 5e) saying that we don't have a pack for items. It would be nice if we could just lump everything together and give it a nice simple name like "A5e Items" or "A5e Objects". 4) It's easier to maintain a single pack and a single custom sheet than it is to maintain two very similar ones. We'd save probably 100 lines of code by merging these packs. At an intuitive level, I also think it just makes sense to have a big list of items. We shied away from really big packs in the past just because we felt they were less navigable, but the new compendium sheets make these big packs a lot more palatable. Hope that explains some of the reasoning!

What're the reasons to merge them?

Quick update given some discussion in the Discord server: It seems that several of you choosing option B are concerned about being able to limit the visibility of magic items for your players. Rest assured, that will still be possible if the compendium packs are merged. The next round of features we're adding related to compendium packs will give GMs the ability to limit what content their players see. This was originally conceived as a way to limit things from various sources, but we can easily expand this to hide magic items from players and so on. For more temporary filtering, all non-magical items are configured to have a "mundane" rarity, so the Fancy Compendium sheet filters can easily trim a list down to just adventuring gear. If you have different concerns about merging packs, definitely let us know either here or in the Discord server 🙂
