Countdown - 1x10 "The Muzzle Pile" Full Reaction

Countdown - 1x10 "The Muzzle Pile" Full Reaction

Comments

I finally got round to watching your reaction to this episode. I was the same of you 'what's going on, who are you?' this episode. Pretty Little Liars did a big time jump and I stopped watching it, so I was afraid this might go the same way. Episode 11 is superior to this episode, but parts of it have a different vibe and some of the usual frustrating moments. I'm going to see it out to the end of the season. I'd say stick it out, even if it's to make fun of or see if it gets any better at all! I don't mind if it gets a second season or not, but I do want to see Jensen in something different. FYI - I much preferred Big Sky to Countdown, it is much more of a small town feel and has a lot better writing, character growth and plot.

Regarding Blythe and his Brentwood home.... Way back in the beginning of the series, I think it was Drew who was asking him why he was being a fed since he comes from an incredibly wealthy family. So the house got nothing to do with the job.

If you do more reactions for Countdown, I will watch them. I do enjoy when you call out all the bad plot points. I know you have been holding back because along the way there has been a lot of bad dialogue and extra easy solves that you were kind not to point out. That being said, if you really don't want to watch the rest, I won't be heartbroken. I am hoping it doesn't get picked up for another season. The show seems to be doing fairly well in viewership, so they might give it another season. If they do, I hope they spend some of the budget on building a writers room and not let Haas have so much control. Although, in one interview Jensen makes reference to the most emotional scene in the series, and then corrects himself to say season. So I am hoping they have already told him there won't be more. Probably wishful thinking.

I've counted out Countdown, but I'll watch you watch it. 😉 In no other way could I so enjoy (within reason) being confounded by, for example, Unrealistic Brentwood Family who at no time appeared during Unrealistic Miracle Surgery so Unrealistic Brentwood Wife could yell at Unrelentingly Admired Leader about Unrealistic Hospital Discharge.

I wonder, among other perhaps more pragmatic considerations. if maybe it is the opportunity to play these characters, rather than the overall plot, that drew Jensen and Eric Dance to this project. I haven't watched Eric's career but I would imagine Blythe is an interesting challenge to play as the stoic company man. And for Jensen, Meachum would seem to be just similar enough to but different from other characters he has played to perhaps feel within his wheelhouse but a bit of a departure? I don't know. I'm guessing! I find this interview interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y--vMGkmFc

I also share your wish that Jensen would get something better to sink his teeth into. I guess to some extent he is limited by the material he is offered, the timing of the projects, the deal with Amazon and his own preferences. From some comments he has made at panels and in interviews, my impression is he likes to work with people he gets on with e.g. Derek Haas for this show and Elwood Reid for Big Sky and Tracker. Do I wish he wasn't doing copaganda and not very logical, if beautifully shot, copaganda? Absolutely. I think he is capable of doing amazing work on deep, thoughtful projects which challenge him and the audience. And I will pretty much watch him do anything - within reason!

Please do keep reacting! I share a lot of your thoughts about the series overall and this episode in particular, though my level of frustration did not reach as high as yours as I had gleaned from interviews and social media, that Borys' story was wrapping up in Ep 10 and they were going to start a whole new case in Ep 11. Haas (the sole writer) is trying to subvert the expectations of jaded viewers who know the beats of a season and so can predict the story by the episode number - from what I understand https://collider.com/countdown-episode-10-time-jump-resent-explained-derek-haas/ I can imagine that if I hadn't been expecting Ep 10 to finish off the first case, I would have found it as anti-climactic and as much as a let-down as you did. (Although I did like the surprise callback to the shooting range scene with Meachum making a long shot to some guy in a window)

Yeah, I completely gave up watching Countdown after this particular episode. For a good 30 minutes, I was actually convinced that Meachum got shot in the head by Boris on that rooftop. I thought that Meachum was in a coma... I thought I was watching one of his dream because of how easy and stupid and cheesy everything was. So when the time jump happened, my hopes were shattered and I became livid. In my opinion, the writing went from bad to garbage with this one. It manages to make the 9 previous episodes worse than they are. Like what a waste of time! Anyway… I don’t think hate watching something is worth it. If you don’t want to react to Countdown anymore don’t force yourself. I’ve enjoyed your previous reactions. (After reading so many positive comments online, it was weirdly comforting to see someone else struggling with this show.) However, I’d rather watch you react to a show you truly like or find interesting. Now, as a side note: I wish I knew what Jensen’s contract with Amazon studio entailed. I don’t really understand the appeal this kind of project could have for Jensen or even Eric Dane. I mean the writing for The Boys or Euphoria is coming from another planet when you compare it to Countdown…

I really enjoyed your expressions, Shelley! It's exactly how I imagined you would react the first time I watched it. Also agreed 100% with your verdicts - my recurring thought is that something like NCIS or Criminal Minds would have dealt with the Boris plot in one or at most two episodes (I'm pretty sure they actually did) and we'd get more character stuff for the team along the way. Jensen had fun doing the stunts and we all got to see the shower scene, which was very welcome. But yeah, I really hope this doesn't get a second series so he can do something better. I'm pinning all my hope on Vought Rising right now.
