Why do we have to hear the CBGB story? Not just the message Cas takes from it but because of the direct parallel between Dean and Claire, both of them putting themselves in an abusive situation that they think is something they want, and needing to be rescued against their will. And then in the next episode Cas will say directly that the two of them have a lot in common. It's not about valorising John, I don't think – one thing I really like is the complicated picture of him and how children who have been neglected or abused can have such a confusion of love and hate and resentment and yearning.
