an explanation I've seen for the difference between the Dean and Sam in this episode and the Dean and Sam in After School Special (4.13) is that Bad Boys is seen from Dean's point of view, so Sam is just a small and vulnerable boy who needs him, and 4.13 is seen from Sam's point of view, so Dean is a huge presence and also his character isn't very nuanced as Sam still saw him as his macho big brother at that age

According to a tweet from Adam Glass, "When written Dean was 14 but when we saw (Dylan Everett) on screen as Dean he looked older so we changed it after we shot to 16 and ADR's it." I think that explains some things.

fun fact: the kid who played Dean binge watched the first 5 seasons of Supernatural in a week to prepare for filming this episode, so he could properly get younger Dean’s mannerisms and affects down properly
