It is crazy looking back, that Angel Hail and Gadriel both wanted to possess a member of the team. Great subtle forshadowing.

The angel fall plot continues into s10 even, with Hannah enlisting Cas to help her track down the angels who fell and don't want to go back when they can (thanks to Metatron's downfall).

I also have always had this theory that Death wasn't actually there to Reap Sam. Given what we learn later on, about how important Sam and Dean are, I always think that Death came to stall Sam, and to keep him alive long enough for Dean and "Ezekiel" to get to him. Don't get me wrong, i don't think Death would have refused to take Sam if he really wanted to go, but I think his purpose there was actually to save Sam's life. He gives him the choice, but the way he is so calm, relaxed, and almost deliberate slow walking Sam towards the beyond, and then the complete lack of surprise when Dean shows up, all seem to me like he is just personally making sure that the Messenger of God's Destruction isn't Reaped before his time. Plus, I genuinely believe Death has a deep respect for both Winchesters, but specifically for Sam, who has always respected Death a little bit more than Dean. Death I think wanted to make sure Sam knew that his life has been well lived, because no one cherishes life the way death does. And Sam's life has preserved everyone else's.

To this day, I still think that what Dean does here, is the single worst thing he has ever done. If he had told Sam the truth, it might be different, but honestly to me this is no different than Meg possessing Sam. It's against Sam's will, and he is then lied to and gaslit for months about why he feels the way he does. I am not saying what Dean did isn't understandable. But it is also wrong. Sam having his autonomy stripped away is bad enough, considering how often it happens, but to have it stripped away by his own brother? The one person he is supposed to trust and rely on? Sam has every right to be as pissed as he gets about this. And to say what he does eventually. This season is such a beautiful mirror of season 5 in that way. Sam's big moral lapse was choosing Ruby over Dean, and Dean was entirely justified in his anger, and his distrust of Sam after that. But on the flipside, Dean's big moral lapse is choosing life for Sam, especially in a way that he knows Sam has been deeply traumatized by before, because he thought it was for the best. And Sam is 100% equally justified in being furious and distrustful of Dean afterwards. That being said, the drama is too die for (full puns intended) and I absolutely adore the messiness of it. The first half of this season is absolutely amazing and I wouldn't have it any other way. Some of my favorite writing on the show, and Jared's performance is just unfreaking believable. I have always felt that he is the very best in the cast at doing the different personas/possessions/personalities/roles that he is given, and his work switching between Sam and Ezekiel/Gadreel is honestly some of the best acting in the entire show. A+++ all around. Can't wait to get deeper into the season! Also, Shelley, the angel plot does continue to the back half of the season, but to just sort of switches from the factions on Earth (Malachai, Barthalome etc), to a focus on Cas vs Metatron. But the Mark of Cain stuff and the drama there tends to overshadow it a bit, thanks to Jensen's outstanding performances. But the angel drama does continue I promise lol. Also, remember that even as a human, Anna was also able to hear angel radio as well. I definitely think the win of this episode should go to Gadreel. Saving Sammy's life, while also securing one of the strongest vessels on Earth, that also happens to be one of the best hunters on the planet, and in the process making it so Dean Winchester of all people owes him. Just a solid day's work for Heaven's Traitor lol
