I understand. I hated how dean died as well. If anything I would have him die from something normal like heart disease or something after having a few years of rest but I just feel like Sam throughout the show has tried leaving the hunter life and Dean without Sam is suicidal so he would never live without Sam hunting with him. It is why he went to find him at Stanford. If Sam has the normal life dean can't be apart of it or it would not be normal because being a hunter is who dean is. Season 6 proved that he could not just stay normal. Season 8 proves how much they thrive in the different life they had without the guilt they bring to each other.

hard disagree about dean! dooming him to that narrative for, as chuck would say, β€œliterary symmetry”’ is as insidious as chuck’s plans were. sam and/or dean making a choice to walk away without death forcing their hands would have been much more satisfying. for me at least!

My opinions to answer some of your thoughts/questions. Dean didn't tell Sam about Benny because he (rightfully) didn't think Sam would understand him being friends with a vampire. He did almost get Benny killed in a few episodes. I'm going to guess this episode gets marked down because of the Sam & Amelia stuff. πŸ˜‚ I doubt Jensen was involved in the casting of Amelia. I don't think episodic directors are involved in the casting of recurring actors.

I think the reason Sam tensed up and went for the machete in that final scene was pure hunter's instinct. He felt Benny's cold skin (remember, vampire's don't have beating hearts, so no warmth to them), and it probably set off the alarms in his head, because remember Dean never told Sam Benny was a vampire. He didn't know what he was walking into, or who was with Dean, so he moved on instinct when he sensed something was off, but he still did look to Dean and when Dean shook his head, Sam backed off. He was confused, and definitely angry (Dean was kinda a jackass this episode towards him, and then the phone broke after Dean went silent, so Sam was probably also worried and scared out of his mind when he got there), and definitely on guard, but I don't think he maliciously or even intentionally went to threaten Benny. His training and subconscious just took over. I stand by my previous statements, most of this seasons issues stem from Dean's lack of honesty to Sam, and this is a perfect example of it, since Sam had literally no clue what he was going into, except Dean had gone into a vampire nest with some random (to Sam) guy he never heard of.

If Dean is also the God parallel then his death had to happen for Sam to have free will. Benny and Sam are definitely parallels for the story this season and Amelia and Dean are also supposed to parallel as well especially with the guilt they put on Sam. Before Jack was introduced I do feel like Sam would be the person to stop god. I do feel like this season was going to reveal Chuck as god near the end before the show was renewed for more so they added Metatron who basically took that role for three seasons.
