Supernatural - 8x1 "We Need to Talk About Kevin" Rewatch

Time for season gr8. Time for purga(y)tory. Talking about the parallels of this season : I don't know if you've talked about it in the past as well or if you've come across that post on tumblr already, but I once saw a post about the parallels between the two stories. Like how often times Benny is seen as a parallel for Amelia, but the take of that post was that Dean is Amelia in the parallel, with Sam and Benny being the guys they move on to and Amelia's husband coming back from the dead like Cas is coming back as well. I think both versions are intriguing to look at, but I think I had never thought about it that deep . I always assumed Dean reached Sam somehow eventually. I also keep thinking about Ty and DJ. So happy I got some cute photos of/with them from PurgatoryCon last year.

OK, to answer your questions: we see Sam leaving Amelia here but it's only later we find out that it's because her husband came back "from the dead". As for where they meet - Sam's gone back to Rufus's cabin as he has nowhere else to go, and Dean's gone to Rufus's cabin as it's where they were staying before the Dick explosion. the timing is all a bit of a coincidence though, and that's just tv storytelling convenience (blame Chuck) To be fair to Dean, he did spend the year with Lisa looking for ways to get Sam back, without success. And all the time Sam was there hiding from him.

i absolutely adore this season. First off, yes, I agree, Sam's hair this season is flawless. Probably my favorite season for Sam's hair style. Only slightly less importantly, I also think it is probably the most balanced season, except for maybe season 9, in terms of whether it is Sam's overarching story, or Dean's, since we really focus on Dean and Purgatory for the first half, and then Sam and the trials for the second (just like in season 9, how we deal with Sam and Gadreel first, and then Dean and the mark second). Both brothers really get their fair share of time in the spotlight, and the arcs that they go on are so beautiful, and tragic and dark. I think season 8 really does a great job of capturing their humanity. For Dean, it is a really close look at his trauma and PTSD, just like we got with Sammy in season 7. Now I am a big Sam girl, and I am fiercely protective of Sam this season, his decisions and choices and how they influence him going forward (as unpopular an opinion as that may be, its a hill that I will die on that I don't think Sam did absolutely anything wrong by chasing his life with Amelia and Riot), but I do also really love Dean's story as well. I love that Dean didn't come back from Purgatory the same as he went in, I love that we get to see how scarred, how terrified, how traumatized he really was by being in that kind of warzone for so long. And I love that we see the consequences of what that does to a person. Dean is harsher, angrier, more self-destructive, more cruel then he used to be, and he takes out a lot of that on Sam. I do think he goes too far, occasionally, and in all honesty, I really think a lot of the discord between the brothers does stem from Dean (lying to Sam about Benny, being a big one, since I don't think it is Benny himself that Sam would have had an issue with (ie: Lenore, Maddison, Amy, hell even Ruby and Meg were all monsters that he gave a fair chance to after all), but it is the fact that Dean hid Benny, lied to him repeatedly, and acted so distant that Sam was hurt by, but also Dean's cruel remarks and grudge holding and throwing the past in Sam's face as well). That isn't to say I blame Dean, because I really don't. He is trying to push Sam away, to protect himself, and Sam, from the cold, ruthless hunter he had to be in Purgatory, but I also think that Dean, like so many people, chooses to lash out at Sam because subconsciously he trusts Sam more than absolutely anyone, trusts him enough to see that the anger is actually fear, and pain, and to help him, and stand by him despite the words, or actions that his trauma is forcing him to dish out. And that trust really is the fundamental theme to the season, after all, because Dean trusts Sam so desperately, so completely, so deeply, but Sam, who by the way is also coming off a massive load of trauma himself, doesn't think he is worthy of that trust, so he doesn't see Dean's actions for what they actually are. Sam, who lost his life, his soul, his sanity, his home, his father figure, his angel and his brother in the span of about 2-3ish years (maybe 4, the timeline is a little weird with all the time jumps, so forgive me if I am off with that), and who is so desperate for a little bit of affirmation, for confirmation of his value, his worth, that he literally cannot understand subtlety or nuance. Sam's mental health has been shredded and decimated by grief, pain, trauma, loss that he isn't capable of being the same Sam that, for example, took care of Dean after Hell. And Dean is so stuck in fight-or-flight mode, so riled up, that he is also incapable of being the same protector Sam has always had before. Watching both of these men try to rebuild their relationship, and get back to the place where they can help each other, whether it be Dean realizing that Sam needs words, needs vocalization of his worth, his value and more importantly Dean's praise, or Sam getting himself together enough to provide the actions that Dean depends on (being solidly present, dependably by his side, demonstrating his dedication to be with Dean and having his back), Jensen and Jared just absolutely deliver this entire season imo. It isn't an easy journey by any means, and it is infuriating because these heroic, brave, selfless morons have absolutely zero communication skills between them at this point lol, but seeing season 8 from the beginning, and knowing where it actually leads to, and what they are setting up honestly completely changes the entire arc, as opposed to the first watch through when you have no idea where they are going. But it all comes down to trust, in the end. Sam's trust in Dean (and Dean understanding it despite his cripplingly low self-esteem), and Dean's trust in Sam (and Sam understanding it despite Dean's admittedly seemingly contrary actions)
