Q&A: designing characters for my comic

One of patrons asked me on discord about my character design process for my comic. Thought it's an interesting topic to share here! I would make it a post for the Deity tier this month, but since it's Q&A I'm sharing it with everyone.

When I need to design a character, I already have an idea about who that character is, their role in the comic and the general vibe! With that in mind, I start with very loose sketches, just trying to catch the vibe I want until it works for me. When I'm happy with the loose sketch, I'm making this caricature-like faces with exaggerated features, until I feel that it works. With long-running comics your characters keep changing as your style begins to form and as you figure out the characters more and more from different angles and with different expressions. Even though I had a design for the main cast when I started LW, they changed a lot over time, and now for the reboot I'm also redesigning their outfits.
