Swear the worst thing about this season is having to see Mark Pellegrino all over it.

It's also the season they grow up and stop being just sons and develop into big brothers and mentors.

With everything going on you'd think this season should be one of the best and most emotional but it kinda seems like Sara Gambell wanted to tell her own story in a way that passes up a lot of interesting idea's to get there and yeah, kinda comes off silly because of it. I will give it props tho that after 3 seasons of dealing with Archangels and Lilith, they didnt go for a more powerful villain like they try to do so much in later seasons.

Season 7 is about Sam and Dean losing their support systems. On this rewatch i think about everything they are losing this season and how it effects the decision Sam makes at the start of season 8. They already lost Cas and Bobby's house. Things that they rely on to fight their enemies. Sam losing his mind and dean losing his leg are also significant to what each character relies on most. Sam needs dean support to stay in this Hunters' life LITERALLY and the fact that he has to hurt himself to do it says something. Dean needs Bobby support and he is actually doing worse then Sam because he is getting suicidal with no hope. Lucifer I feel represents the trauma and baggage of Sam's hunter life. The fact that Dean and Lucifer keep being paralleled I feel means that Dean is part of that baggage because he is the reason Sam stays. He thought he got rid of Lucifer by believing dean but that baggage stays with him because of Dean's presence. Dean literally is the reason Sam got the soul back that would have these side effects.

God I love this episode so much! Jared and Mark play so well off of each other, you can feel how terrified and lost Sam is, and I love that we never really hear exactly what happens in the cage, but we get enough innuendos and hints that they really don't have to come out and say it. But by not saying it, it is somehow much more horrifying and you just feel for Sam so much. Personally, the first time I watched this I thought it was just a projection of Lucifer, until I saw season 9. Remember when Cas and Sam are alone after Sam expels Gadreel, and Cas tells Sam he still has some of Gadreel's grace inside of him? My theory is that here Sam still has some of Lucifer's grace inside of him as well, so that Lucifer absolutely is still connected to Sam, and able to influence and direct some of the hallucinations. But I would say Lucifer only plays with some of the hallucinations so that Sam genuinely can't tell if it is real or not (lets be honest, Sam is a genius, and spent almost two centuries with him. If it was fully Lucifer all the time, he would figure it out quickly). So I would say Sammy is having a healthy double dose of real Lucifer and fake Lucifer, and that strain on him is what causes the physical issues Sam experiences down the road (the insomnia, for example)
