They gave Fitzsimmons and Deke a connection at the very start of 5x1 All of them wore mask when they first appeared in space. Both Fitz and Deke shocked themselves trying to fix something on the zephyr. And Simmons has the most history with the monoliths so it being a family heirloom to Deke is a clue.
