The string on the door was already placed there by Peggy as a way of her being able to tell if anyone’s been in her room without her knowledge (similar to the penny trick Ward used back in S1 of AoS when he hid Koenigs body). Dottie simply placed the string back on the latch of the door so that Peggy wouldn’t realise that she’d been snooping around in there.

In episode 3 when Dottie takes down that man her pose is very widow like. What I like about this series is that even though it can be uncomfortable at times the asshole characters are still characters and surprisingly they aren't one dimensional. They learn and change as well. Chief and Thompson's views were challenged and they both adjusted properly when they were proven wrong.
