We meet the alpha vamp in the next season and again in s12 – when he gets killed, but yes that plot didn't really go anywhere, it's just introduced as a piece of the puzzle to do with Crowley looking for a way into Purgatory so he and Cas can raid it for souls. The trial is 7.04 Defending Your Life!
