I usually skip any Campbell scenes because they are the worst! So condescending, mocking home life even though we saw younger Mary's wasn't some compound and hear lines about their wives, kids, etc. Then they all get killed off like amateurs if you believe the history/clout of their name. It's very similar to the BMoL storyline of acting like elitists and looking down on hunters - just to die easily. Gwen starts to get at least a bit likeable but just like Mick, this is the ultimate death knell on SPN. Comparing Dean's year to Sam's in s8 is tough but honestly any romantic interests don't work well for the overarching story for Dean and Sam (or Cas even if you think about Jimmy's family or his 'wife' Daphne in s7). Lisa knew about the 'life' but was also a victim twice over while Amelia didn't as far as I recall but we didn't know much about her and many fans thought she was fake or evil. Neither of them could be safe whether they knew or were memory wiped in my opinion because even Lucifer used a flashback to Amelia's story when he was pushing Sam to accept him to get out of the cage.

Couldn’t agree more with everything you said.

I actually like S6 a lot more on rewatches because you have the time to notice all the nuances and details, all the choices that were made and how everyone stepped up their acting game when you're not trying to figure out WTH is going on. And yes, not everything was executed well, but there are some great episodes and great acting in this season. I'm kind of bummed that we're going to miss out on some of the better episodes and shirtless Sam. For instance, it was a great catch you made with the Djinn parallels. "What is and What Should Never Be" was a Raelle and Sera episode, and they tied it all together here with the daughter of the Djinn in S2.

Oh this is going to be a fun ride! I too came to s6 'knowing' that it wasn't good and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It has some really great episodes – The French Mistake, The Man Who Would Be King – and a lot of good ones from Clap Your Hands if You Believe to Appointment in Samarra, but at first watch it didn't feel to me like it held together as a season. I think it holds up better the more you rewatch it and think about it. One thing we miss out on is Cas's point of view - we get it dumped on us all at once in the Man Who Would Be King but until then (6.20! 20 episodes in!) he's quite elusive and all sorts of things are happening that are inexplicable to us as viewers until the mystery is solved, sometimes many episodes later. Because we don't see his point of view, we don't understand why he's behaving like he is. In s4 and s5 we see Cas's character developing and his views changing, and we see this at the same time as Dean does. In later seasons, we get to see him in scenes without the brothers and he has his own storyline, sometimes quite separate from Sam and Dean's. In s6, he has a very active storyline but we only get to glimpse it from time to time, until 6.20. It just feels like something's missing. By the way we find out later that Crowley resurrected Samuel to work for him in return for getting Mary back eventually (something Crowley surely lied about) - so Samuel must have been in hell, I guess (doesn't surprise me). That's what the Campbells are doing and why they take the djinn instead of killing her – they're delivering monsters to Crowley because he's torturing them to try to find out how to get the souls out of Purgatory, so he can have more power (and Cas can get the power to defeat Raphael) - and we don't find that out for ages and ages so it's not surprising you forgot

I think my issue with season 6 is that it is not a sum of it parts in my opinion. It has come interesting concepts but some are covered too much (souless Sam) and others are not covered or fleshed out enough (Alphas/Mother). I find this a OK start but it did not overly excite me for the rest of the season. I always liked Lisa but I feel the writers let the character down in terms of the build up or lack thereof to her being Dean's partner in prior seasons, to seeing a little bit more of them as a couple to the absence for such a long period until the end of the season.

The reason the premiere is rated so low is very simple... SPN fans (especially 1-5 purists) like their formula, their characters, etc. and season 6 immediately introduces a ton of new concepts (new Djjinn, The Campbells (most fans didn't care about Mary so bringing in her family didn't matter then, Lisa/Ben). It wasn't till the later seasons when the show got more... "CW-ish" that we started getting some fans that were more welcoming. My best friend and I were huge fans at the time, I introduced him to the show and I'll never forget the intense arguments we got into over this episode. Lol After an episode like Swan Song, it's almost like he expected something just as good and thats just an impossible ask. Also, another thing i remember from the message boards then ... people hated that Dean and Sam weren't always hugging and playing "love you bro" due to the soullessness of Sam.

Aside from the fact that the real reason for it was the show's no-girls-allowed rule, I don't have much of a problem with Lisa's proposition to Dean. It's no different than if she were dating someone in the military. Guy goes off to a dangerous situation for months if not years at a time with infrequent communication and when he comes home, they pick up where they left off.
