The holes in your knowledge is always surprising to me because you are so knowledgable generally. To transmit electric power any decent distance, you need to get the resistance as low as possible ... if everything was DC, you'd need to have everything at the same voltage as what comes out of your plug. And then your power lines would need to be, like, 50' in diameter (no idea - I didn't do the math). But if it's AC you can run it through a thing called a transformer, take it from the 1000 V (or whatever) that comes out of your generator and step it up to 100 kV, and by Ohm's Law, your resistance is pretty low through wires that are, say, the diameter of what you see hanging from your local power lines. And then on the pole serving your neighborhood, hang another transformer that steps it down to 120/240 for your house. That's why we have AC. It becomes a problem when you try to connect entire grids together since the AC frequency has to be exactly 60 Hz on each side for it to all work ... so they seem to cheat these days and rectify the AC to DC, connect to the other grid, and use an inverter (like the one in your UPS, but several sizes bigger ...) and make it back into (acceptably janky) AC and send it on it's way. https://atlas.eia.gov/apps/electricity/explore
