Interesting that you're looking at moving away from {Tru,Free}NAS. I was on FreeNAS until I found it too restrictive. I then moved to FreeBSD 9 and 10 - I had random LAN speed issues that couldn't even be solved by one of the FreeBSD congestion control authors. I've been running Ubuntu LTS on the same machine (an Atom C2578 Supermicro box) for a couple of years now. I don't know if I'll go to something like a high end Synology or a custom built box in something like a Silverstone case.
