And finally in this episode we learn why Azazel did everything he did, he had to get someone to open the gates of hell in season 2's finale so Lilith can escape from hell so that she can raise Lucifer back

As for this episode, I was gobsmacked about the angels' plans and about who Ruby turned out to be, even though we've seen glimpses of who she would become. I was so invested in her to be on the good side.
Gen said that Ruby cared a lot about Sam: "I almost feel like, deep down, she's really in love with Sam." She had to lead Sam down that path because "it was for his own good."

From the DVD commentary, Eric Kripke said Gen has gotten such a bad rap from the fans. He told off those fans and said they were brutal and unfair towards Gen. Just like Alona Tal, imo they both got treated very badly by some of us due some part (not all) to the show's writing choices.
At min 41:58 Shelley "Who saved them? ...who put them on the plane? is it god? Chuck?
Yeah, it was Chuck. He also puts back Cas back, who was exploded by Rafael here in this episode. This was revealed later in the Dark Side of the Moon episode. This reminded me of the latest podcast of SPNThenandNow - both Rich and Rob when watching DSofM, didn't remember the plane ride from 5.01 and how confused they were "what plane ride?" when Joshua informed Sam and Dean about that off-screen plane ride rescue that happened in the season premiere episode, lol.
At min 52.54 Sam allowing the nurse to be killed, and at 53:06 killing innocent people (re: the same nurse) who are possessed,
For me, it cannot be justified and Sam crossed the line when he killed that nurse - it's a no-brainer. Sam still had the option of finding a meat suit that was already dead and using his power to force that Lilith's demon into possessing a newly dead body that still had blood in it, exactly like Ruby herself. He then can slurp that demon blood to his heart's content. But noooo, that is too much work for Ruby, because Sam still has some breaking moral and ethical points to cross over.
Who changed that voice message - this got asked at the S5 Comic-Con panel and Eric refused to confirm that it was the angels. Yeah, it was very obvious to me that it was them since Zachariah said to Dean that Sam needed a little push. And then in the DVD commentary, Eric just inadvertently (or not) said that yeah, it was the angels - that they were the ones who tricked Sam with that message causing him into drinking the blood of that nurse.

Season 4 is such a great season for me as it is the culmination of the 4-season plot arc that was meticulously planned. It has the advantage of having many engaging plot reveals and fantastic plot twists.
In Season 5, the plot arc plateaued a bit as there were not many twists after that could top up those in S4 imo, though there are still some doozy plot reveals.
Having said that, S5 made it up to me in a different way: with how big the emotional pull and how emotionally connected and in sync I felt with the major players. How remorseful Sam was, how desperate he was to achieve redemption, how disappointed Dean was with Sam, how disillusioned Dean felt about the so-called destiny they had to face, the feelings of hopelessness when they lost so many friends, to find out that they had to beat the horsemen, and terrified into thinking that they could not overcome this very big life hurdles, to list a few. The sadness of Swan Song: hearing the wind blowing at the culmination of Sam's remembering their childhood memories before falling into the hole in the ground ... and Dean kneeling and left feeling so desolate ...
Yeah, for me S5 might not have the bells and whistles of S4 but it still managed to shine on its own merits.

Holy crap, I never noticed how the way that confrontation with Cas was shot, when he says "I see inside you", that it's shot almost exactly like Cas' confession. Oh man the brainworms.

I absolutely love this episode and it is my top favorite finale. I definitely prefer s4 to s5 finale, tho it’s been awhile since I watched it. Oooh the s15 parallels with Dean and Cas’s convo tho, very interesting!
