Rob talked at a con about how his Boys role in story would break records in a negative way compared to Jensen's - these guys are so fun, love them all!

Chuck doesn't say that Sam makes a deal with Lilith, he say they have sex coz in his vision he sees the part where both Lilith and Sam going to bed together but the vision cuts off before the part where Sam picks up the knife and tries to kill her. There are 2 explanations that could work for why chuck seems to be getting visions when no one is around: 1- like CAS said prophets have archangels watching over them at all times so chuck could be putting an act for Raphael. 2- this is not God, this is chuck who is a prophet and only becomes god's vessel after this episode, like God hasn't possessed this vessel yet at that point.

I think Chuck was messing with Sam and Dean in this episode, with regards for what he wrote about Sam and Lilith. I don't think that part was an actual "prophecy". It was to play with them.

While I overall liked this episode, I've never liked the idea that Sam and Dean's lives were scripted.

Chuck's overall goal is for Sam and Dean to fight each other. The ultimate fight. He wants Dean to kill Sam. He also wanted Dean to kill Jack. That scenario seems to be his main focus, and Sam and Dean kept thwarting him. And it drove him bonkers.

Other comments talk about Chuck method acting as a prophet and I think that captures what Chuck is doing here – he's buried himself so deeply in human form he kind of believes it himself (of course that's all in retrospect as I don't think the writers meant him to be god until late in s5, or at least Rob only found out in the s5 finale). But I do think this episode is a significant one for Cas even though he only has a brief role in it. He knowingly tells Dean how to derail the prophecy, even if it's done through hints and winks, and even if he'll be pulled back to heaven to be brainwashed again before the end of s4. But it's still his first real act subverting Chuck's narrative, which will become his role in the greater story of the series.

i still dont think Lilith actually at all expected Sam to agree to her deal. I think this was her testing his strength, to see where he was at and how close Ruby was to getting him ready. Notice after this episode Ruby starts keeping the blood from him so he starts going into withdrawal, which means when he inevitable starts drinking again he’s going to drink even more to overcompensate. I think this was Lilith being like, okay, we are on the one yard line, and she starts shifting into the final gears to open Lucifer’s cage

I love all the groundwork that this episode sets up! Not only does it really pave the way for the meta stories, but the ominous message about the future villain ten seasons down the line is awesome looking back on it. Also the boys learning about slash fans is hilarious

I think Dean actually won the episode. He spent most of the episode trying to change the details of Chuck’s story and finally figured out how to do that (with a hint from Cas) by going to get Chuck and bringing him to the motel to get an Archangel to scare away or kill Lilith.

Its crazy. He almost compulsively repeated what he did, over and over across, thousands of universes and "variants."

Kyle

Great points. It was always my thought that Chuck was going full method for Zachariah and the other angels.

You make many good points on chuck's motivations and I wanted to add that chuck does seem to want to prove himself right on the decisions he made on Amara and Lucifer. The Sam and Dean killing each other is definitely because of his struggles with Amara and him adding jack to the story is there to prove how hard his decisions as a father were and he was hoping Dean would kill Jack to prove that. When confronting Lucifer in season 11 he was so certain he was right and even said what would you do about Lucifer if they were him. On chuck method acting. Raphael is constantly watching Chuck as they believe he is a prophet. If you think about season 6 and Raphael leaving his post it is after chuck vanishes because he is no longer watching him.

The visions Chuck gets are from Heaven. Zachariah and the Archangels, thought they were letting him see stuff, so that kinda explains why Chucks pretends when no one's around, so the angels dont get suspicious. But Raphael wouldn't protect Chuck from Zachariah, cos Zachariah works for him and Micheal, so im sure Zachariah had some leeway to hurt him.
