Very good point that if the story had been fully planned out, then there would have been some worry from Azazel about Dean saying he was the one that kills him.

Season 2 is one of my favorite seasons. It's about tied with season 4. I like the finale better. It is packed, but I liked it. I think they handled it well. Most shows these days are packed because they have so few episodes, so this really isn't that much of a stretch. Kripke has said that he didn't plan on Dean going to Hell, originally. That the writer's strike basically made that happen. We'll never know what would have happened without the writer's strike, because Kripke mostly had vague ideas and plans and fleshed things out as the progressed. We now know about Dean and Azazel having meet before, in season 4. Kripke didn't know that when they did this finale, but it would have been cool to see that touched on. So Yellow Eyes had to have been remembering the conversation he had with Dean, and how Dean said he'd be the one to kill him. Guess Yellow Eyes was just too cocky and thought he had the upper hand. My theory that "giving in" to their powers makes the special kids go back seems to carry through with Jake.

I much prefer the finale over part 1. Watching Dean’s emotional devastation is heartbreakingly riveting. That being said, I am probably an odd person out in saying that of the Kripke era, S2 is personally at the bottom of my finale list for rewatch excitement.

Part 2 was packed - but I remember the DVD extras - they said there was SO much in this 2 parter that got dropped, so they had EVEN MORE stuff they wanted to do, but didn't have the time in the ep to do it.

I definitely enjoy part 2 more than part 1. looking back at my favorite episodes list for each season, part 2 is on the list and part 1 is not haha i just love the concept more and the grandness of it all. i’m also a sucker for jensons breakdown scenes and the one in this episode is one of my FAVS!! “what am i supposed to do?!” like oh my god

Crowley being the Crossroads demon would be fun, and now I'm watching it thinking 'this is a very Crowley thing to say'. It would be hilarious if it actually was Crowley in this vessel lol

I personally like the finale better than last episode, it just has everything and ties everything together nicely, I think all special kids have the potential to master telekinesis if they really try

Yeah, this whole thing is to get out Lilith and have a Vessel waiting for Lucifer. And demon blood strengthens the Vessel for Lucifer as Cas says and bonus, corrupts them.

Kyle

The devil's gate being opened frees Lilith who has to break the seals and then die to get Lucifer out so Azazel is working on the big Lucifer plan. He would've been ecstatic that it all actually worked.

I think from a technical point of view part 1 was the better episode, not by much they are both stand out episodes. Part 2 is one of my favourites of the whole show though because of how hard in hit me when I watched it. The notes of loss and self worth made me cry buckets but I do think it is the performances that elevated the script.

AHBL PT2 does feel a little rushed due to the density. In interviews, they said they had to scale it back quite a bit, too! I can't imagine what it was like in the first few drafts. But I know Kripke's intention was to wrap up the psychic kids/Azazel/Roadhouse story line and move into another direction, so I give them credit for trying to do it well. I like AHBL PT1 better as well. It has enough space between the beats to let things breathe and simmer a bit..earn the emotions of everything. Also the micro bookend of the episode starting and ending with Dean yelling for Sam will always break me. Originally, S3 was supposed to be about Sam using his powers to save Dean and the repercussions of that IIRC. I have always described the dynamic between the brothers as Dean is always willing to sacrifice himself for Sam... and Sam will sacrifice the world for Dean, so I will forever remain a little bitter that we were robbed of that story. I think it would have been an interesting plot to develop. Unfortunately the strike really limited the writers on how it all played out. Even so, I love S3. Several of my top 5 episodes are in it. S4 is when the story expanded to include seals and more of the traditional Christian lore with angels. But I'm sure if there is more to this, someone will chime in with the details.

Yeah it was posted last month

Did we do a poll for s3 and I just don’t remember it?

I usually never do non-personal ratings and rankings, so I honestly don't really know my answer there. I could see arguments for both eps. Personally I like this second part better by a lot. For me the previous episode is good, but not on my fave list. This one though is. I guess it's that I'm a sucker for the pain (hurt/comfort and angst bits in general). I also often get less out of Sam centric episodes. Jensen's acting in this one is so good and I love all the scenes with him here just too much to not have this rank way higher than the first part.

Quick comment after just watching your intro…. I think this is when Lilith was released. I’m basing this on the s4 finale in the flashback to 1973 when Azazel posseses the priest in the convent and asks Lucifer to “whisper through the crack” and tell him how to get him out, and Lucifer (via the dead nun) tells him Lilith. And the priest says “but she is locked away in hell. How will she do it?” And then Lucifer says he will have to find a child. A very special child.” And remember, Azazel always called them his special kids. I think the whole special kid thing was to find someone who could cross that devils trap. A regular demon possessing a human couldn’t cross it. And once released Lucifer would need a vessel. I think that’s what they mean by they need him to lead an army (as Lucifer’s vessel.) And about the Cain and Abel lineage… I don’t think Azazel or the demons cared or probably didn’t even know about that. The angels did though. The demons thought John could/would break the first seal…simply because he was a “righteous man in hell.” But the angels knew it would always come down to Sam and Dean. Now I’m off to watch your episode reaction. 🙂 oh! I also think all we’ve seen really supports that these kids wouldn’t have had powers without the demon blood. Because it doesn’t really make sense that somehow Azazel knew specifically which kids would be born with powers ten years after he made the deals with the mothers. He wouldn’t know that a decade before they were born. Plus even Ruby said to Sam how he had god given talents, then stopped and smirked and said well, not god given. I just don’t think it makes sense otherwise. Plus we never see people on spn with powers like some of these special kids except them. Edit to add… I think the demon only gave Dean 1 year because by now they were probably starting to worry that John wouldn’t break.. and they looked at it as a chance to get another righteous man in hell soon to try to break. Of course, if the demons knew John was going to make his escape very very shortly, I bet they wouldn’t have even given Dean a year.. they probably would have made him swap that very day, like John had to do for Dean. I think pt 1 was better than part 2. The emotional impact alone was much higher. At first I thought they should have killed Sam in the finale, then see Dean making the deal ep 1 of s3, then I realized that wouldn’t work since they pretty much follow real time. (Like when Dean died he was gone 4 months until he came back.) I think pt 2 was really strong the first ten minutes…but the rest of the ep was just kind of eh for me. It just seemed like any old episode.
