In several times watching this show, I always thought the same as Shelley. That the demon blood/special kids go hand in hand with being Lucifer's vessel. But your and others explanations here, really clarifies and makes sense now. Thank you for pointing out that the show was working on two sub-plots in regards to Sam. (one in conjuction with Dean - the vessel bit).

The whole thing with the Special Kids is confusing. There are two parts at play here. One is the bloodline issue for Lucifer - and Michael. The best vessels are those of a certain bloodline - I forget if it's Cain and Able, or something else. That bloodline is best suited to being able to be a vessel for an archangel. That didn't seem to require the person to have special powers. The special powers seem to be important for the "soldier" part. For leading the demon army. Seems like it was important that they have powers that would be used in leading the army. Still has some logic gaps in there, but that's the gist. The powers are what made it possible for Sam to expel the demons. Even though it took demon blood for him to really be successful. It is odd that Sam never seemed to get the full powers like the other special kids - like Ava. I've always thought it was because he didn't want them and so pushed them down. I also think "opening up", as Ava calls it, is like allowing the evil part to take over. Why Ava was able to kill people and not feel bad about it. Seems like every special kid who opening up basically turned to the dark side. Except Andy. He didn't really "open up" though. He meditated. lol I think Sam was a special case, so they had to find another way to manipulate him, if he wouldn't go willingly into the dark side. So get him with Ruby and hooked on demon blood. Kripke, and others, have talked about it before - that they wanted Sam and Dean to be humans, without special powers. For the most part. Fighting against a world of evil, supernatural, beings. So that's why Sam didn't become a big time psychic. They just left all that unresolved and open for head canon. The ending of this episode is so sad, especially coming after the last episode. Ava was summoning the demon to kill the other special kids for her. In other worlds, it wasn't them. We know that. We've seen some of those other universes. Apocalypse world didn't have a Sam and Dean, so the fight between Lucifer and Michael happened.

Lilith chose little girls cos real world Lilith myths are heavily tied to children.

Kyle

Lilith specifically was supposed to break the 66 seals, she's the only one who could do them. Lucifer says this to Azazel.

There are so many ways to analyze it to pieces since we get a massive info dump here but the show very much existed season to season so they did the best they could at the time. And yes, Sam could have powers but you might recall the ol' black eyes issue came from those powers just like when Dean twisted his own soul with the mark. Pretty sure neither of the boys should want to be demons at all but this early Sam model was really way "too precious for this world"! Now I would at least like to point out here in 2x21 that Sam has found out that he has had demon blood in him since he was a baby and that his mother knew who/what Azazel was and confronted him still. Dean doesn't know about this at all until he gets tossed back in time by Castiel in 4x3 and that's when we hear the whole Azazel was covering his tracks but more importantly he finds out about his mother's deal to save John that led to their entire family's demise. In 4x4, Dean shares the trip back in time with Sam who slips and mentions this was all done so 'Yellow Eyes could bleed into my mouth' which was news he never told his big brother. It really helps to further divide these two while powering season 4 like crazy! I only really caught it on my second watch so maybe I went overboard with this post. And boy are we just barely scratching at the surface that is the Winchester family lies - hah!

Here Azazel wanted to open the devils gate to let out the demons - that’s his demon army. Before the gate was opened demon activity was pretty rare on earth, it took demons a long time to climb out of hell. The special child was supposed to lead the demon army in breaking the 66 seals finishing with Lilith. Azazel didn’t know which child it would be. In the convent in the 70s he managed to speak to Lucifer through a crack in the cage (a flash back shown in lucifer rising) and Lucifer had told him to find the special child. I think Azazel gave potential children his demon blood as a marker, so he could keep track of them and influence their dreams. These trials at cold oak were then the final elimination round to find the strongest one. I don’t think the boy king of hell (the special child that won) had to be Lucifers vessel. It’s not like lucifer would share power once he was risen, I just think the special child was just needed to be strong enough to kill Lilith and free lucifer. That Sam happens to also be lucifers true vessel just makes him an even stronger candidate. Lucifers vessels didn’t have to be fed demon blood as babies. They just needed to drink demon blood before (and during) hosting him, to strengthen them. Something specific to only lucifer, for unknown reasons. And yeah you got it that Ava killed Lilly as part of the elimination round👍🏻😄. (That ‘hungry for a sandwich’ headache she had right before Lilly died was her summoning the acheri demon.) (fun fact: they are one of the few subset demons shown to not need a vessel, they just form from their smoke.) - I think Sam’s death here just hits so hard every time. I can never get over that. 😄 so loved watching your rewatch of this 🙌🏼😄 thanks!

I think you have forgotten season 13 alternate timeline was one where Mary did not have children but the apocalypse still happened. That means that Micheal and Lucy got vessels that were not Sam and Dean. That is probably why God abandoned that timeline. The angels (specifically Micheal) want it to be them because they are following God's orders but it doesn't have to be. The demons are ok with it being anyone. That is why they were ok with Nick. Azazel didn't want all the children together because Sam would try and do exactly what he did here. Bring them together to fight against the demons. Yellows eyes just wanted the strongest one willing to kill others using their powers. Like you said the final seal is killing Lilith and they need to do it with powers and not try and save the girl she is possessing by doing an exocism so they have to have no empathy unlike Sam did this episode. It is also why lilith chose little girls for so long. If you are willing to kill a little girl then you are already at the lowest level of empathy.

Not really spoilers but I'll delete if someone tells me to. But the Demons don't know Cain and Abels blood line ended up the Winchesters, (While the Angels know precisely), so they're putting all this effort in trying to find the special kid. Lilith has to break the ceals but it's still best to prep the Vessel and get them on board. The prince's of hell are princes and we're meant to rule after the Original leadership of I assume Lucifer and Lilith, but I always wondered where Alastair was on the hierarchy of Hell , clearly at the top but if he cared to try it, could have ran for leadership against Azazel?
