Unpopular opinion: One of my favorite standalone episodes ever. Like, one of my favorites of the entire series, seriously. I think it is so well executed on so many levels, it's underrated. Personal taste of course. I'm very glad you enjoyed it. And both of you put the pieces together quite nicely. Billy came back to save his brother from being killed by the same man who killed him. So yeah, Cal is the murderer who forced Ronnie to help him abduct Billy in the 1990s. It is implied during the interrogation that Ronny was also in some form a victim of Cal, perhaps a type of abuse. Obviously he was very scared of him. The opening score "All the pretty little horses" is heard several times in the episode. It's very interesting that not only you but quite a few people including myself see a physical similarity between the younger brother Josh and Ronnie. Obviously there was no connection, but, one wonders if they intentionally cast someone who looks similar to throw the audience off in some manner. Tragic ending yes, but also in other ways it was a success as Scully (and Emily) explained at the end. Very enjoyable, take care!
