or you could relax and let me enjoy the show how i want to enjoy it

If you're going to watch important episodes to the mythology, you really need to watch 'Asylum' from S1. Taken into context aft viewing S15 and knowing Chuck's outcome, it's the first instance of one of them trying to kill the other (Sam under the influence of the GhostDoctor). Oh, and not EVERYTHING IS A PARALLEL! I hate hate hate when you get tunnel vision, like a cop trying to affix a crime to a specific perp without the evidence leading him/her there.

Amye Sabin

Oh also as a 90s era X Files fan, as soon as I saw Constance Welch's husband I was like 'It's Duane Barry!'

Really happy to be re-rewatching with you, Shelley. Season 1 is my favourite season, personally and the Pilot is such a classic. A few comments: - Eric killing three women (wearing white, no less) in his first ep *bombastic side-eye* - Unpopular opinion: I think some of the quotable lines from S1 were determined by the advertising campaign ;) - I think Sam did choose the hunting life in S8 when he left Amelia... - Jensen brought so much depth to Dean. Watching After School Special in S4, Brock did a fine job as Dean, but Jensen's portrayal of Dean is on another level. - Knowing from the finale that Dean stood outside of Sam's apartment for hours because he was scared to go in...breaks my heart. - They felt like brothers from minute one. Magic.

Each summer hiatus I would rewatch from the beginning. Originally, it was with DVDs, what a treasure those were. Every rewatch, I continued to catch little things previously missed. A number of years ago I started watching YouTube channel reactions and discovered how much fun that was to watch others fall in love with my obsession. Your journey has been such a joy for me and now we begin the hard core fan rewatch! Thanks to the series finale, all these years later there was still something new to weave into what I was already familiar with. Knowing now, that Dean stood outside the door of Sam and Jess' place for hours, afraid to knock because he was afraid his brother would just tell him to get lost, gives the scene so much more impact and also helps to reveal Dean's true nature under that cocky exterior. The little gems we've been given over the years on screen and bts gives you just a slightly different look at the journey that unfolds and I love it! I am so excited to follow this rewatch💖

ElysiaFields19

I wasn't a Dean girl yet (totally thought I was going to gravitate more towards Sam for a quick minute there), but "My boobs" surprising me into a laugh = when I knew I was gonna keep watching this show. ’Til then, I was enjoying the style, the music, the world-building, the relationships... but you made me surprise-laugh, Show? Fine. 😏 Ahem-hem. Autoplay, LET'S DO THIS.

SKK

Late to the party lol. The monster of the week is a interesting one. I always thought that the women in white is supposed to be a parallel to John and the husband is supposed to be Mary. Mary's/husband secrets lead to women suicide/John becoming a hunter (basically suicide based on the life of a hunter and he dragged his sons with him) John/women in white hunt any supernatural thing/cheater even though they aren't the cause of the initial problem for revenge. Later in the episode HOME we see that both John and Dean have trouble returning to their home.

Christopher simeon

Shelley - interesting you clocked that Sam was technically unfaithful to Jess because he was "choosing Dean" in that moment. It reminded me of something Jared had said about the finale and the mirroring with the pilot being important because of that choice. Their conversation and positioning on the bridge in this episode really stood out as that example other than what has already been discussed. I know you aren't a fan of the finale, but the parallels they worked in are much more meaningful knowing AND seeing the effort they both put into it while watching this pilot in full again with you.

Vel

From just the hunt standpoint of the episode I think Sam wins, but I think Dean wins the overall episode. So many classic quotes from this episode it's hard to pick!

KAREN GAUCK

Eeee, it's so much fun to experience this again with another fan my age, who enjoyed The Winchesters and its finale the same way I did and has a lot of the same biases. (Though I am a Naomi-coded Cas girl. It's complicated lol) Mary's deal was that in 10 years Azazel would come into her house and if he wasn't interrupted no one would get hurt. She didn't know anything about having children back then. And I think she probably buried her head in the sand about a lot of it, trying to be 'normal'. Ahh, everyone is such a baby in these early episodes. They hardly seem like the same people lol. It's going to be so much fun going back through all of it again with you.

... I don't know if you need this Shelley, but the Superwiki is great to use as more research materials source for your in-depth journey into the SPN wormhole:- http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/Category:Episodes ... the first time I dove into the wiki, I didn't come up for air for a long time lol, trying to click all the links provided in every episode... ... and the scripts too, http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/Scripts_and_Casting_Sides

I have a theory around John and why he left he suddenly (I talk about it on my rewatch on my YouTube channel). I think John may have been taken or confronted by demons on the woman in white case, which is why he disappeared and didn’t contact them. It was this time when he learned more about Sam and the demon plan for him.

Sharon Owen

IIRC in her state of the union thing she said she’s watching all of them but only reacting to eight.

Laurel

I meant to ask, although haven't finished the reaction yet so maybe you mention it, but are you watching all the episodes and just reacting to the 8 voted for? Or are you just watching the 8 episodes voted on? Does that make sense? Also, when I watch the pilot now, after seeing the finale, I always think about what Dean said in the finale that he waited outside for a while before he went in because he was nervous of Sam''s reaction to seeing him. That always sticks with me now when I watch it.

Susan Stork

I can't believe how many spoilers there are here! You might as well mention Destiel!😂😂😂😂 oh, oops there I go😁 anyway, this show and Friends are the only shows that I have seen a million times and can still get pulled into the storylines and characters. I just love it. I agree with what someone else mentioned that Dean's character jumps off the screen right away. I think it's because Sam is quieter but Dean is more demonstrative, I'm not saying that's wrong I just think that's how the characters are meant to be. I think my favorite line is "no chick flick moments" and then the bitch and jerk exchange. Always makes me laugh. It's fun watching Jensen go from adorable to sexy and brooding in the seasons. That's worth the re-watch in and of itself☺

Susan Stork

I'm so thankful that you have decided to rewatch the show with us at least partially. As someone who hates spoilers I didn't comment on your original reactions in fear of spoiling anything or suggesting what might happen in the future episodes even by accident, but it's so interesting to watch your reactions. Your affection for the show is so endearing and great to see as someone who the show means A LOT to, you just seem get it on more than just the surface level. I love how you really want to get more into it and pick it apart. I think it just goes to show how much you love spn, thank you so much for your sincere reactions and always expressing your opinion, it makes for more genuine reaction and it feels like watching the show with a friend. Looking forward to the next one :)

Paulin

Hey Shelley! Sorry if I end up repeating what others might have said, but I’m just commenting on your reaction, not reading other comments. A couple things you asked about: 1) The numbers John left behind were coordinates for the next hunt (Windego location). 2) The husband did cheat. He got angry at Sam because he was feeling guilty and got defensive. 3) John wasn't answering the phone because he didn’t want the boys directly involved with Azazel as we find out later this season (it still kinda sucked, but he wasn’t just being an ass). 4. Mary only knows that Azazel will go into her kids room on this date, so she wouldn’t have known what it meant for Sam, only that something would happen to him. 5) Sam actually drives the impala somewhat regularly in the earlier seasons. A couple of things that stand out to me in the Pilot on rewatch, that I don’t remember hearing you comment on. First, the fact that we just saw the moments before and after Sam was fed demon blood, thus starting his whole "unclean" storyline is sad (we don’t know it until season 2) Second, I think Dean breaks into Sam's place because he was scared to just knock like a normal person in case Sam told him to leave. This way, if Sam tells him to leave, he can blame it partially on breaking in, not just Sam not wanting him around. Also, in the finale he says, he waited for hours outside of Sam's building the courage to go in and see him. Also, you pointed out that this in when it started for Dean, when John handed Sam to him to save. That’s definitely true. But we also see that Dean got to experience the love of his parents, untainted. John even hugs him just out of affection, not fear for him (like Sam in Something Wicked). Dean actually got that taste of family until he was almost 5, which isn’t enough time, but those are pretty formative years. Part of the reason Dean loves John so much, imo, is that he has those memories, while Sam only has the drill Sargent. Sam never once had stability until he went to Stanford. Yes, Dean did his best, but he was only a kid himself. Sam never knew parental softness or safety. In this first episode, the first time I watched it, I felt for Dean more than Sam because of how much he wanted his family back together, and how much he clearly loves them. But, as the show goes on, I feel more and more for Sam because he never had normal at all. Also, Jensen stood out for me as more dynamic on screen early on. Then again, he is playing the type of character I typically do like. But, the guys on screen together beat everything else for me from the start. As the show goes on, I found Jared (by Season 2) more compelling until I find the guys pretty equally keeping my attention, just with different … strengths?

Sare

I am partial to the recent theory that I read, that John is being hunted by YED/Azazel. I haven't watched S1 for a long time and haven't seen and can't recall the canon that supports this yet, but in Scarecrow we do know that Meg is trying to get Sam away from Dean, and in Shadows she was hunting/looking for John via Sam and Dean. [ETA: found this quote instead from Kripke " ... the demon was gone and John was running into dead ends for 22 years. And then the demon suddenly appeared again, which is why John took off in the first place in the Pilot episode since the trail suddenly got hot after 22 years."] Since John had been looking for YED/demon that killed Mary since ground zero, so it was kinda iffy that when he found out about YED he went missing/hiding from his sons. He would want them with him to finish the journey, but if he doesn't have the weapon yet then ... yeah. This also jives with John not contacting Dean and Sam come what may since he was aware of Sam's connection to YED, as he didn't want YED anywhere near them since he found out about Sam, and has suspicions about Sam's lineage as per his murder board in the motel in this episode. YED: You know the truth, right? About Sammy? And the other children? JOHN: Yeah. I've known for a while. So he goes hiding from his sons, and keeps his speculations to himself, afraid that Sam would go dark side in the meantime due to connections to YED particularly now as the demon appearing, and doesn't want them with him/to find him and keeps giving them orders to hunt to keep them away, while at the same time, he is trying to find the weapon/hasn't found the weapon that could kill YED/Azazel - The Colt.

Every time I watch, I just laugh when they are at the gas station and Sam shouts out “So you still running credit card scams” (or something like that). Just let everyone know you are criminals, Sam! 🤣🤣🤣

AdoptDontShopPets

I struggle to choose most iconic line between “Dad’s on a hunting trip…” and “Driver picks the music…”. If I had to, driver picks the music fits more situations you can use in real life, lol

AdoptDontShopPets

it's a great line reading by jensen, for sure!

Shelley

They say in Wendigo that John was never actually there. The impression I get is that he is having the boys pick up the regular jobs he was aware of why he is busy tracking down YED. And the vamps in Dead Mans Blood say Elkins and people like him had hunted them almost to extinction. That’s why hunters didn’t see them around any more.

MidnightSilver

I honestly don't know what john was thinking jumping from one case to another without solving shit?? Having his kids pick up where he left off? He was on the woman in white case then left without solving it, hopped onto the wendigo case and peaced out without solving it, thought vamps are extinct etc... Like that's not a good hunter, that's terrible hunting but I guess dean is used to cleaning John's messes by now

Hasnaa

I would say Dean won the episode. He saved Sam three times (taking the fall with the police so Sam could escape, distracting the ghost from Sam, pulling him from the fire) and was just generally very entertaining 😌 My favourite quote from this isn’t the obvious dad’s on a… but one of my favourite dean one liners when the cop says “you got anything thats real?” And Dean with his little grin just goes “my boobs” 😂 no matter how many times I watch it it still makes me giggle

Kit

oh interesting, i thought she knew her deal with have something to do with her kids. i can't wait to rewatch 'in the beginning' omggg

Shelley

do we get any indication of when john finds out about sam's possible demonness either now or later in the show? i can't remember.

Shelley

i definitely am!

Shelley

Yay! I’m so excited for your re-watches! Man, Jared and Jensen were such BABIES😭 It’s wild to look back after seeing season 15. In answer to your question about Mary’s deal: the only thing Mary knew was that in 10 years Azazel would be “stopping by” her house. She asked what for, but he just said that as long as he wasn’t interrupted that everything and everyone would be fine (his definition, of course. Infecting Sam with demon blood was decidedly NOT fine😂). That’s why I can never understand the Mary hate. She was a literal CHILD and if she had known #1 that she would even HAVE kids in 10 years and #2 that the reason he wanted to drop by was to do what he did, she would have either said no or been way more prepared. Mary’s not perfect of course, but she didn’t deliberately do anything wrong. I hate how Dean is kind of a low key creeper/definition of toxic masculinity for a while. But, you can still see the softie in the center of that, especially when he and Sam are talking about Mary. Poor Jess😭 It’s wild to watch the Sam stuff at the beginning knowing what we know now. Like…is that friend with them possessed by a demon right now?! Ugh, so many thinks to reflect on. Anyway, so excited to see your second watch and get into more fully formed deep dives!

Kristin Dorner

I’m so excited for this rewatch! I LOVE hearing your insights now that you know how the story plays out. The big thing that jumps out at me every time I watch the pilot is just how AMAZING spn is at characters and how the pilot perfectly sets them up. We get to know enough about the characters that we start to understand them and their motivations, but there’s still enough that we don’t know that their development and reveal of their deep down traits is exciting to explore throughout the season. I think the best example of that is dean and how in this episode we’re introduced to him as someone who is cocky, sarcastic, and maybe just a little bit lonely. But then his character is developed throughout the season to reveal to us that he’s actually incredibly sensitive, great with kids, his cockiness is a cover for the pain and trauma he has dealt with ever since Mary died, and that he’s actually incredibly lonely and just wants his family together again. The pilot works so well to set all of this up while still leaving masses of room to explore his character. It’s also a great contrast to Sam who (imo) is, at least in the beginning of the show, a much simpler character in that a lot of his motivations and character work is quite obvious and isn’t a slow reveal. I LOVE season 1 of spn. Yes technically it isn’t the best season but it’s what actually drew me to the show. If the show started with the same vibes as it did in the later seasons, I probably wouldn’t have watched it (I love the later seasons but I started the show for a gritty supernatural horror with good characters). So s1 will always be in my top half of the seasons when ranked because I just love the vibe

Kit

Great reaction Shelley 😄 so good to go through this journey with you again and see all the enthusiasm is still there (and more 😄) and great to hear your thoughts deep diving and looking at the big arcs 👍🏻😄. A couple things you missed. The husband probably was unfaithful. Yes he was upset but he said “maybe I made some mistakes” implying that he had cheated. And also in the car at the end they boys said the numbers were Co-ordinates to Blackwater Ridge (the wendigo case). So when John took off he left the woman in white job to finish and the next case he had lined up. i wouldnt mind if your pause your reaction to take notes, there are a lot of subtle looks and throwaway lines you really need to look out for 😄 but see how you feel 👍🏻 And yes John is an arsehole for just dropping off the map and not picking up the phone but 2 background things to consider. He isn’t sure if he can trust Sam, we get hints that he is aware of the demon plan and doesn’t know if Sam will turn. (Hence the save him or kill him secret he whispers to Dean before dying.) And also in the Meg Shadow demon episode does say he wanted to keep them both out of it to keep them safe. (But radio silence is totally a shitty way to do that.) so yep, plenty of info to gather on the complex untold story of John Winchester 😄 awesome reaction again. Really enjoyed it! Thank you 🎉

MidnightSilver

Loved this reaction 🥰, the husband did cheat on the wife and in a fit of rage she killed their kids. I looooooove early seasons Sam, he's so anti john I love it, he was so angsty and firy I miss him. What I wouldn't give to have a prequel with dean in those 2 years without Sam, that would be super interesting, we would probably see how his relationship with Cassie started, how lonely he was, how did he fill the time, his first solo hunt etc.... Of course practically the only way you can do that is via animation coz you can't reverse back time but I would love it still, it's so sad that dean didn't get a happy ending where he has someone and never feels lonely again 😭. I want him to be surrounded by people who love him who choose to be with him not forced to. Sam and dean were so acab up till we got Jody.

Hasnaa

That's a great idea

Yeah! ... here we go ... I'm so excited to rewatch this series again with you, Shelley ... Some interesting trivia from Superwiki/others: - The pilot was filmed in March/April of 2005 in and around Los Angeles, CA. After they got picked up they filmed in Vancouver. - John's motel room is papered with articles. One is about a cambion suggesting John was speculating on Sam's heritage. - A deleted scene (watch) included on the Season 1 DVD shows the reason Dean returned to save Sam from his burning bedroom: his watch stopped, the car radio send static and that's why he turned the car around, sensing something was wrong. Later on, we learn that in the days before the fires, signs crop up in an area, cattle deaths, temperature fluctuations, electrical storms. - It was assumed by Sam, Dean, and fans that Azazel was the one who killed Jessica. However, it was revealed in 5.20 The Devil You Know that Sam's demon-possessed friend Brady did the actual killing, albeit on Azazel's instructions. - In the first episode of Supernatural: Then and Now, Jared and Jensen described how real fire was used in the scene where Jess dies. " "As soon as you get warm, run," Padalecki says, adding the note they were given was something along the lines of: "Give us what you can, but as soon as you feel unsafe or hot, get out of the fire. Ackles recalls a specific take in which Padalecki was a bit too in the moment and was fighting against Dean, who was trying to pull him out of the room. Ackles remembers telling Padalecki, "I'm getting hot, we gotta go!"" - In a 2022 interview with Nerds and Beyond, Jared Padalecki revealed that Jeffrey Dean Morgan played the shadowy figure of Azazel standing over infant Sam's crib. - Jensen was brought in to be Sam Winchester. Eric Kripke said: It wasn't until later on that we just realized he had such that... smart-ass attitude that he's meant to be. Born to play Dean ... I'm - I am so thrilled with... Jensen Ackles's performance as Dean Winchester through the run of this series.

rose mnor

It might be worth you checking out the SPN then & now podcast, I seem to remember some interesting stories in it about the making of this episode.

Kim Rigg

About the episodes you're not recording... are you gonna talk about some of your thoughts/about them at all at the start of the next ep. you're reacting to or only in the wrap up?

BexFangirl

I think perhaps Mary had pushed the 10-year deal to the back of her mind. But she hadn't forgotten her knowledge as a hunter, so when she saw the lights flickering she knew what it could mean. It's so good that she thinks Azazel is John when she first sees him - the twin traumas of the brothers' childhood which are brought together again in the s1 finale when John is possessed by Azazel... The Pilot is such a well-crafted set-up for the series, concisely establishing the world, the back story, the characters and their relationship as well as telling a complete MotW story that reflects the central story - dead mother, damaged father and two children whose lives are destroyed. And the idea of a past trauma that spreads destruction through haunting. Also, John is such an asshole for not just calling Dean and telling him that he had to leave town in a hurry and asking him to go to the motel and pick up his things. It's as if Dean is being set some sort of test by his father - did he know he'd go to Sam? Meantime, Sam is being tested or provoked by Azazel who has Jess burned on the ceiling.

Jay

I hope you like this show, Shelley. Oh wait, right, you've already seen it. Well, I hope you enjoy it again and again and again and...well you get it

Susan Stork

This is so exciting. Going through this with all the knowledge now. My personal first watch was already a mix of first watch and rewatch with all the fan videos, gif sets and panels I had already seen before the show and even when I watched it I was still engaging in the fandom and not shying away from spoilers. I knew the basics of the finale and I had seen the confession scene way before I started watching myself (1 year). So my experience was very different from yours. To now see/hear how you see the progression of the show in a more similar position is very interesting, especially having seen your first watch.

BexFangirl

Hooray, what a great start to the New Year! Welcome to the hardcore SPN experience, ending the series and starting all over again from the Pilot!

Let's gooooooooo.
