Bringing this story full circle and playing off nostalgia sounds like a nice homage but again, what was the point of it all other then reverting these characters back to their presets? Dean never wanted to be free or toes in the sand and Sam no longer thought about work/life balance and 100% accepted having no agency until his brother died. I mean if you really think about it, Dean died in a way that he was still cleaning up John’s mess. They referenced his journal as a throwback, even though neither of them believed they were real until he confirmed it - in the same episode where they they met the vampire chick who called dibs like 15 years later. Thanks John! Sorry, obtuse thinking but given the last few seasons...it fits.
