"Even if my associates lose this war they have allies!!"
(But as I am late to the party, Shelly, you already know that already)

As "J" noted, lots of Tolkien in this episode, the gift of mortality being the top one.

In addition to what AceBunny said above, one of JMS' biggest influences for Babylon 5 (particularly in story structure) was Tolkien. In the books, Sauron is defeated around the halfway point of the third book and the rest is dealing with the aftermath (Scouring of the Shire for example). The existential threat has been dealt with but there's still a lot of fallout to grapple with and they had a great deal of influence beyond themselves, such as their dealings with EarthGov.
Also, the Planet Killer above Centauri Prime left because the Vorlons at Coriana VI had called for reinforcements, not because they were feeling graceful to Londo.
