Best of the rest: Untangling F1's confusing midfield battle (ad-free)

The latest edition of The Race F1 Podcast sets aside the battle at the front and puts the focus firmly on unravelling the confusing midfield fight.

Williams, Sauber, Racing Bulls, Aston Martin, Haas and Alpine are embroiled in a battle for fifth through to 10th in the constructors’ championship with tens of millions of dollars at stake.

Mark Hughes and Scott Mitchell-Malm join Edd Straw to examine the competitive situation for all six teams, and discuss what we can expect for the rest of the season.

Why has Williams’s form slumped, where did Sauber come from, should Haas be doing more, is Aston Martin on the right track and is Racing Bulls the midfielder’s midfield team are all discussed - as well as whether the Alpine team can set aside its penchant for nonsense and lift itself off the bottom of the table.

I don’t think so. Even though, the MGU-H is going away the turbo itself is not. So the turbo will still be there to “dampen”/ruin the sound of the engine.

It frustrates me endlessly that we refer to the six slowest teams as the midfield. Given how F1 has evolved the language we use to describe it needs to evolve to. I don’t think we need to stick to old definitions of what makes a ‘back marker’. Also it can be a shifting picture. Sauber were backmarkers for much of the season. Now they appear to have moved into the midfield. With alpine / Aston / haas slipping from midfield into backmarkers

With MGU-H falling by the wayside next year, can we look forward to louder engines?
