The reason Merlin wasn't affected is because of his magic. If he was gay why would he fall in love with Freya? She wasn't a man so he can't be gay. If you say he was bi that could maybe be a thing. But certainly not gay.

One thing i really liked about this episode is how Gaius trusts Merlin's capabilities not only as a sorcerer but as a physician, Merlin has never been able to heal using his magic on this show, he tried many time but never worked so he doesn't seem to possess any healing powers or at least hasn't learned that type of magic yet, so it's crucial that he learns medicine from Gaius.
Arthur mocking Merlin for being saved by a girl "Gwen" then turn around and tell the same girl that he's proud of her & that she was equal to any knight is the most two faced behavior i have ever seen from Arthur, i love how Merlin always shuts him down when he shit talks like that, i loved Merlin's come back saying "don't think too hard we wouldn't want you to hurt yourself 😂 basically calling him a simpleton, only Merlin can say this to the king and get away with it.
Literally the only thing i could think of during the whole why aren't you effected, Merlin conversation is 🏳️🌈🌈

Yep, this is definitely the weakest episode of season 4, and the show, to me. I’m so glad you pointed out the misogynistic undertones and messaging of this episode. There is an upsetting amount of casual underlying sexism that occurs semi-frequently in the show anyway, (mainly Arthur’s insults about Merlin being ‘like a girl’) which I’m usually able to roll my eyes about and move on, but this episode brought that into the actual plot.
Such a shame that an episode with a heavy knights/Gwen focus is ..this.
I am so glad you picked up on the scene with Gwen and Merlin though, when she’s like “why hasn’t she affected you?”, I swear every single time I see that scene, I want to shout “Because he’s GAY, Gwen!”. The subtext has never been so strong.
It’s also, as you pointed out, just a very dull, slow-moving episode in general. Like what did this episode do?
It’s weird that such a terrible episode occurs in the midst of arguably the show’s best season. I can assure you that this is both as bad as this show gets, and this season. From here on, the season continues to be great. I have no doubt that it’ll remain your favourite season.
Thanks for the great, and honest, reaction!
