Downton Abbey - 4x4 "Episode 29" Full Reaction

I think Lord Gillingham is too pushy, and we won’t even talk about his valet… Glad Edna’s gone. But what is Thomas planning? 🧐

God what a horrible thing with Anna, I've always struggled rewatching this season because of 4x03. Have to say, new Patreon sub from youtube because I'm lowkey obsessed with Downton Abbey, love your reactions as always :)

Shelley, I AM SO SORRY for spoiling anything for you! I will try to be very careful going forward because I loathe spoilers. It's hard to remember what I was thinking the first time I saw that scene but I think I just assumed what happened when Edna slipped into Tom's dark bedroom after giving him way too much alcohol. But it WAS an assumption that wasn't confirmed until this episode, so I apologize for that. Tom certainly doesn't feel like he was a victim of sexual assault but he was. He never showed any attraction to Edna whatsoever, and very little of anything beyond politeness. He never would have allowed anything to happen if he were able to refuse it. And as drunk as he was, we can't even be sure that he was able to have sex with her, but she would have made sure they were both naked in the bed when he woke up. The same toxic culture that has Anna feeling like she did something to invite her rape has Tom not even able to recognize that a man can be a victim in that way. Edna has been emotionally manipulating him ever since she set foot in the house and expertly playing on every vulnerability he has. It was so satisfying to see Mrs. Hughes ripping her to shreds. Side note, I freakin' LOVE the Duchess for how kind she was to Tom. I so want him to be more confident of his place at Downton so I love any encouragement he is given. Oh, Tony Gillingham. I was yelling at my TV just like you were the first time I watched. Like, dude, you seem to be a good person and your feelings seem sincere (if hasty) but BACK THE HELL OFF. This woman is a widow of less than a year, she is not ready for this. I think the culture of the day was to encourage relatively quick remarriage and Tony is certainly a catch (rich, titled, handsome, kind) so I'm not shocked that Robert and Cora are hoping for the match, but Mary is not ready. Nowhere near ready. And poor, poor Anna. I appreciate that the Crawleys are noticing somethingis wrong. I mean, I would have expected Mary to notice, given how close the two of them are, but Robert and Cora picked up on it, too. And Bates! Saying that whatever is wrong between them must be his fault because "she is incapable of fault." I just want him to be able to comfort her. :(

Rosanne Stewart

I'm so glad Rose is a consistent part of the show now. She's a breath of fresh air and quite fun, albeit reckless.

I'm sorry we spoiled stuff about Tom. In retrospect, it really wasn't clear. Lesson learned: I should not comment when I'm still in the heightened emotions. Sorry for that.
