Agree, Lauran. No, they still haven't calmed down. Those brosonlies/J2/Wincest shippers are still going after Misha. They went to his publisher when he wrote that poetry book which climbed the NYTimes bestseller list, and the PBS during his Roadhouse stints, to besmirch his reputation. And the most recent to Natalie Abrams because of his role as Harvey Dent, pretending to care about some potentially harmful plotlines involving a disabled villain with MHI (Two-Face). Let's not forget getting a journalist thrown out from a convention because of misinterpretation of tweets intending to harm J2 whereby those tweets were actually quotes from a TV show, easily proven but hey, throwing out that journalist (a DeanCas shipper) was the "best" way to go solving the issue - not CE best moments I tell you. I myself was provoked here by one of them in these comment sections last time by the stale "if he is so popular why not headlining a new show but still unemployed instead" and "why are his photo-ops not sold out at conventions" and "why if he is so poor he went to private school" implying he lied about his background. Don't know her intentions why these questions were directed at me in such a way. Ho no, this baggage is not ending anytime soon ...

I know you've been around fandom enough to know about ship wars, Shelley, but as someone who has been around this particular fandom for 17 years now...it seems to go a little deeper than that, from my perspective. I was around for Spike/Buffy vs Angel/Buffy and Pacey/Joey vs Dawson/Joey and others, and never saw it get this bad.
When I say it goes deeper than that, I mean the resentment between the "factions", as it were. I never heard of shippers in those other fandoms actually going so far as to try and get an actor fired as some Wincest and J2 shippers did to Misha Collins. Multiple times. Or posting a list of things to throw at that actor during a convention while he was on stage (again, some Wincest/J2 shippers against Misha--they planned it but fortunately someone reported them and security was increased for that convention). Booing Misha on stage. Purposely hoarding the mics at conventions during J2M panels so no Misha questions get through, trying to make him and his fans feel bad. Physically threatening Destiel shippers, also at cons. Trash talk about Misha, Danneel and Genevieve. The list goes on and on, years of this behavior from the loudest Wincest/J2 shippers (I'm sure some of them are perfectly lovely people, but of course the decent ones are drowned out by the crazies).
And of course the Destiel shippers can be very loud and at times overly demanding and I'm sure, very annoying from the outside. The Chad Kennedy debacle in season 9 was especially cringeworthy (attacking a CW executive on Twitter over a ship was not a smooth move). Many fans who prefer Just The Brothers don't like how loud it got as more people saw the subtext, especially from season 8 onward, and seemed to resent the focus being taken from Dean and particularly Sam.
Anyway, the point. After more than a decade of this stuff, people snap and get defensive very easily, on both sides. I love Dean/Cas, but I didn't set out to ship it. I saw Dean as straight when I first started watching. During season 8, I changed my mind. DeanCas is literally IN the show. It is intentional. It's writers doing what they do--telling a story through subtext when they are not allowed to be louder about it. If you see it, you see it. If you don't, you don't.
There is so much more from the past 5 years or so that adds to the tension, but I would have to get a little spoilery, so I'll save that for if the topic comes up again.
TLDR the loudest shippers on both sides make things harder for everyone as always, but I despise anyone taking it out on real people.
Sorry for the long comment, just trying to paint a picture of why so many of us are so crazed on the topic from both sides. You'd think it would have calmed down a little after the show ended, but no. π Always happy to get your take on things since you don't come with all the baggage us oldsters do!
