Edd answers your Saudi Arabian GP F1 driver rankings questions

A contentious Saudi Arabian Grand Prix meant a contentious edition of Edd Straw's F1 driver rankings - and plenty of chances for Edd to explain his thought processes in response to your questions and comments.

Inevitably how Edd ranked the penalised Max Verstappen and winner Oscar Piastri split opinion, as well as whether too much weight was put on Lando Norris's qualifying crash. Here's Edd's reasoning for all of that, plus why he put Yuki Tsunoda last when many of you felt he had an encouraging weekend, and plenty of other thoughts about performances up and down the field.

Edd, curious if maybe you could maybe do a half year review of your rankings up to that point once we get there? Perhaps you’ve done that in years past, but new to the member’s club this year! And I’d echo what others said - thanks for working through all our comments! I think if we average the few races already this season, Piastri is top 3…

Ha - didn't mean to make anyone feel stupid, so apologies if the response was a little harsh. As you've explained, what you asked came from a place of enthusiasm and support for the home hero! You're absolutely right on Oscar though, he's been hugely impressive and, in fairness, it's a strange quirk that he's not had a #1 spot so far this season. Every chance of a successor to AJ in 2025 I'd say. And if not, then surely after that

Edd Straw

Hey Edd. Just a quick one to thank you for putting up with comments from people like me.. I listened to you answering my question re Saudi. Made me feel a little stupid for asking it. But as a 58 year old racing tragic I’m a desperate to see another Aussie win a WC. It’s been a long time since AJ in 1980 and my man Webber got so bloody close in 2010. I’ve been telling anyone who will listen for year years now that Oscar is the real deal. Guess we are finding out. I reckon I’m right. Thanks for all the quality insights and keep up the excellent work. Cheers.

You are a brave man Edd for answering these! Don’t stop. Even though you are having to defend your rankings. Love it.

Tim Martland

Love the idea that each driver has their own individual mission and what they can do each weekend with the car and the other numerous variables makes qualifying, the race, and these rankings so fascinating! Thanks Edd!

I think his many high profile mistakes earlier in his career live long in the memory even though he’s ironed out those kind of errors. He was the people’s choice for WDC and the London live show so think Ferrari have let him down badly with the car this year.

Chris Parrott

I think Leclerc has been underrated by fans in the past, and I think it largely comes from the popularity of Carlos Sainz. I’m a massive Leclerc fan and am probably biased, but it always felt like Leclerc was judged much more harshly by fans for errors/poor performances than Sainz ever was at Ferrari

Michael Sanderson

The Lando fans are going mads. Jeez. Credit to Edd for still answering these questions. That 2nd one about Oscar was just out there as well.
