No spoilers, just gonna say that all the tidbits this show drops have a purpose, and the things it sets up will be paid off. Sometimes it takes a while for those payoffs, but they're worth it. Your questions will be answered in due time ;) I'd forgotten all about this episode, but watching it back ... oh boy, the breadcrumbs!

Thor the dark world came out in theaters right before this episode and the shield team is the clean up crew after Thor and the dark elves battled in London. It's these details that wouldn't take away from the MCU if you did not know about it but makes the universe feel more fleshed out if you do. Ward episode is a harsh one for his character. He has always had control of his emotions but this episode we see it's because he blocks it out and ignores those emotions which is not healthy. Ward had said before that his brother would beat up him and his little brother so we see the abuse there but he also said it was the first time he felt hate towards his older brother. We see May and Ward bond over their shared trauma but May handles hers a lot better. (Tho it's still not great) Like you said the show really knows how to pair characters together while still feeling like a whole team. This episode sort of places the women of the show in different places with Ward. The beginning showed Ward and Simmons brother sis dynamic. We see Skye consistent concern for ward's emotional wellbeing throughout the episode but he seems to hold back being vulnerable with her. But then the end we see him and May's silent but mutual understanding with no words as they are both specialist and have that shared trauma in common.
