Fitzsimmons are a great pair and these last few episodes they were not as prominent but this episode like you said gave us a closer look at their friendship. But first let's talk about Coulson. We know that in the movie's he is a loyal shield agent who usually seems to follow protocol but lately you are right he seems more assertive and more laided back in his position. He feels different but that is a good thing as he did not listen to direct orders from that agent. That character actually was in the MCU one shot Item 47.(which inspired this shows creation) If you are interested it is 12 minutes video on Disney plus. You should watch it before next episode actually on your own or react to it.
