Early access: Why Lando Norris is struggling more in McLaren's 2025 F1 car [ad-free video]

Lando Norris leads the 2025 F1 world championship after two races, but beyond the bare statistics has had a less than comfortable start to the season in McLaren's new car - and an especially difficult Chinese Grand Prix weekend. Ben Anderson and Scott Mitchell-Malm delve a little deeper and assess how convincing Norris has looked so far as he aims to go one better than he did in 2024.

It’s only the second race of the season... It’s interesting to hear about their driving styles as that explains the deficit in China. That is just one circuit and a tad unfair to say Norris is struggling this season because of one race. They’re both incredible drivers but will still have their ups/downs because of how hard they are pushing each other

Honestly I don't understand the whole mentality gimmick with Piastri. He's incredibly talented, but there's been a fair few races where his engineer has had to tell him to calm down because he's driving too aggressive, abu dhabi and miami last year come to mind. Most people think they're pretty equal, so I don't understand how a p2, when Norris clearly struggled at the weekend is a bad result. This is the sort of result we were propping Verstappen for in the likes of singapore and Netherlands last year. It's not realistic to think you're going to beat your teammate who also is wdc caliber every weekend.

Everyone is doubting Norris mentality, but he always is back right away if something went wrong. Just proved it in China. The Race itself was flawless after a Lot of struggeling. Seems so much more calm and relaxed too. Both drivers are just different personalities and this will be an interesting fight over the whole season.

Everyone is so quick to discount Norris or Piastri, and it in turn ends up discounting the other. They're both great drivers, if one gets the best out of a weekend it doesn't spell doom for the other. Especially considering the first two races this year have been quite adverse in terms of moisture, heat, track surface, limited practice time -- I don't think it's time to hit the panic button, but I doubt that will stop anyone from resting on it.

I feel everyone feels Piastri is better mentally just because he doesn't talk about it like Norris does. Piastri has far more history of starting a weekend nowhere and disappearing to the back of the lead group for the rest of the event, and that is exactly the same thing in my opinion. Piastri also made that mistake in the lead at Hungary which meant Norris could undercut too, so it's not like we don't have evidence of him feeling the pressure. It's going to be an interesting year, but I don't think the mental differences between all the drivers except Verstappen (and this is just because he's already won multiple, with nothing to currently prove) are that different.

Let’s bring it on! I love it when teammates have to battle, it’s so entertaining.

Personally I have Piastri as more likely to win the championship than Norris: all down to his mentality. Calmness under pressure from a very helpful.

It will be interesting to see how Norris/Piastri get along with 2025 car and racing between themselves
