Last year’s Michelin decision to come back with an even better rear tyre that ruined to season for almost everyone not on a ‘24 Ducati could of been the final straw. It was a bit like telling a rider their strength is more than enough and they need to work on their endurance and they come back in the spring boasting they can bench press 30kg more but their endurance is still the same. Madness

I see this largely as a negative. Their approach in WSBK has continually demonstrated an interest in creating crushingly fast tires with high deg. The deg is not necessarily a good or bad thing as it can add interesting dimensions to racing, but I strongly agree with Matt Oxley’s take on tires. He believes that tires are the single best way to control the performance envelope of the bikes. That we could simultaneously improve the quality of the racing and the safety by designing a tire to suit the sport and not to create flashy record setting lap times. I think marketing people at the tire companies over estimate the fans valuation of their product based on the bikes setting lap records on them vs being the sole supplier to the best racing. If Michelin were to have invested the effort in the front tire for 2024 and just left the already excellent rear tire alone, we would have seen a closer grid and better, safer races. Instead we get single make domination and lap records. Is Michelin seeing a ROI? I don’t think so, they have a PR problem instead.
