📕 F1 Book Club: A mechanic's inspiring journey to the F1 pit lane

Joining Edd Straw for the latest episode of F1 Book Club, exclusively for Race Members, is Red Bull mechanic Calum Nicholas, whose inspiring memoir Life in the Pitlane: My Journey to the Heart of F1 came out earlier this year.

The book promises to take readers on a breathtaking journey from Nicholas's humble apprenticeship at a North London garage to the pinnacle of motorsport.

In this interview, Calum opens up on writing the book, the realities of working in F1, and on some of the book's key themes, including diversity and inclusion.

Life in the Pitlane: My Journey to the Heart of F1 is available now from all good booksellers.

I was really looking forward to buying the book, but it’s not available in US until May 6. His comments on the high-performance podcast about Lewis made me so optimistic about the future of F1. You can tell he believes in the diversity and inclusion of F1 with every fiber of his being.

I have read multiple accounts of former F1 engineers and staff finding more lucrative motorsport gigs elsewhere. The point made about how the cost cap was made by those least affected is unsurprising. This will need to be solved soon because sporting and technical rule changes don't put food on the table of the rank and file F1 employees that keep the sport functioning.

Great conversation, so much so that he's moving on from the F1 frontline to what he was talking about in his chat! Can't wait to see what his next role will lead him to!

Enjoyed the podcast and have ordered the book! Found the talk about cost caps impact on wages very interesting. Never thought how it can trickle down and harmful it can be. Would love to hear more from Calum and excited to read the book!

Great conversation. Really enjoyed the part about how F1's thirst for possibly unsustainable growth really putting a strain on the personnel... Basically just like any other company at this point.

He's such a good explainer of things.
