BBV10s S11 E9: How would F1's V10 era look without Schumacher? We answer your questions (early access)

We’ve had an absolute deluge of questions from you for our traditional ‘Ask us Anything’ episode in Season 11, and as ever there were far too many great ones for us to fit them all in one episode.

Glenn Freeman, Ben Anderson and Edd Straw have a great selection to work through, including hypothetical questions about how F1 would have looked if Michael Schumacher hadn’t got his F1 debut with Jordan in 1991, or if he’d never existed at all!

There’s also the question of if McLaren ever truly valued David Coulthard (and who was better out of DC and Damon Hill!), how Jacques Villeneuve would have got into F1 if there wasn’t a vacancy at Williams in 1996, if McLaren could have won the 1998 championship on Goodyear tyres, and Edd gets to tackle a dream suggestion about what F1 could have done with teams that failed to qualify back in the early days of the V10 era.

We’ll have many more Q&A episodes exclusively for The Race Members’ Club after S11 has finished, so we can get through even more of the questions we didn’t make it to this time.

Love this episode With Edd and Ben

I don't think BBV10s has covered Nelson Piquet leaving F1 at the end of 1991, something I'd be interested in given the Schumacher question about what would have happened if he hasn't entered F1 with Jordan. How much was Piquet's F1 exit actually related to the emergence of Schumacher?

And the films spreadsheet! Just get Letterboxd Edd!

Joe Sweeney

True, I can't dispute that!

Cardiff Giant

well imo Eddie did it for much longer so... cannot compare

My question for the next series of BBV10s is: Could Williams have saved a bucket-load of money and not implemented an ERP system after all, instead employing Edd to manage their XLXS, or dare I suggest it, XLS files?

Michael Holden

Pedro Diniz waving a Brazilian flag after finishing 10th (and last, 7 laps down) was featured on the ‘95 review VHS. Always struck me as odd even back then.

Oliver Warman

Alex Wurz is in fact an enormously popular F1 commentator and pundit on Austrian TV. Just saying.

Philipp Eitzinger

To answer the BAR question. Salo had a 7th and 8th place finish, and Zonta had an 8th and 9th place finish. So, hardly transformative as you noted.

With Edd's reasoning about Eddie Jordan being the best team boss, could Jackie Stewart not fit into that too? Admittedly he had help from Ford, but he started a team from scratch, won a race within 3 yrs then sold the team to Ford for a fortune.

If Schumacher didn’t exist - who would we consider to have been the generational superstar talent 94 to 2003 when Alonso really emerged? Would Villeneuve and Hakkinen be held in higher esteem than they are now because, frankly, we knew Schumi was the best driver even when he didn’t have the best car? When would the “moving the game on” have happened, if it wasn’t for Michael, in terms of driver preparation and fitness? I need to remember these questions for the next seasons Q&A….

Richard Snape

I wasn't a Schumacher fan, but I agree that it is so sad about he and Senna are not around in their dotage to get their perspective on events. After all, both, but especially Schumacher was a central part of the V10 era. I remember reading once, that because nearly 80% of the people on board died on the Titanic, that over 3/4 of the story of that night has been lost. It's very much the same with Schumacher I feel.

Will the rest of the Ask Anything members episodes take from the already existing 200 question pile or will we be required to send additional questions? As always it was a fun and exciting listen!

Μάριος Γαντζούδης

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say: Share the spreadsheet!!

Adam Brewer

Loved the Schumi question. It could have come down to who got the Jordan drive. Bernd Schneider was in the running for it, so is it possible he would have become the replacement Schumi? Would he have been good enough? Probably not as inspiring as Schumacher but could have been a title challenger?

Mark Martin

Also that last pre quali question was amazing. God imagining the Life chugging around being a rolling menace before it explodes.

Padraig Reilly

200 questions! This is why I never sent one, I cannot imagine what sort of bizarrely esoteric question would need to be fielded, that's not already covered.

Padraig Reilly

Oh please let us see the spreadsheet!

Chris Parrott

The PreQ question and discussion was superb! 🙌
