BBV10s S11 E8: Panis's sensational sole F1 win (early access)

For the final regular episode of Season 11 of Bring Back V10s we let YOU choose a race from 1996, and you voted for the chaotic Monaco Grand Prix that was won by Olivier Panis's Ligier.

Ahead of the third season of our sister podcast And Colossally That's History, Glenn Freeman and Edd Straw are joined by Colossally co-host Matt Bishop to look back on a bonkers afternoon in Monte Carlo, and to discuss everything else that was going on in F1 around that weekend.

We look at how Panis came through the madness from 14th on the grid to claim Ligier's final F1 victory, and discuss the precarious state the French team was in at the time. And there's also discussion of the heartbreaking retirements from the lead of the race for championship leader Damon Hill and Benetton's under-fire lead driver Jean Alesi.

Speaking of Hill, this was the weekend when the first rumours about his seat being vulnerable for 1997 emerged, and it was also in Monaco that Ferrari first spoke to Ross Brawn about following Michael Schumacher over from Benetton.

One of my all-time favourite BBV10s pods. Thank you The-Race

Michael Holden

"Take the piste" surely?

Great episode to round off the series Am I right in thinking Glenn might have had to have a quick word with Edd and Matt after Matt’s Jenson Button/McLaren off piste story to keep them on-subject? 😂

Podcast name idea Edd and Matt’s Anorak Facts It’s kind of works! Bishop and Straw go off piste

He did the worst backmarker teams of the 1990s on YouTube a few years ago!

The Race

Seeing as this was a mid field win, I would love Edd to do a BBV10’s deep dive on top 10 back marker teams and drivers. Either how pathetic they were, best/worst looking car, best talent generation, best race etc.

I had very similar thoughts. I do think the flat yellow of 97 onwards (especially 99) was a better shade. Unrelated, the conversation about the gold fag packets reminded me of the Oasis B-sides box set from about 2000 which was in a gold and silver B&H-style box. They looked great to a late-teenage Simon.

I really want Edd and Matt Try To Out-Anorak Each Other (EAMTTOAEO) Pod

This episode answers one of my long-standing questions about the Jordan livery - I remember thinking I didn't like the 1996 livery and then seeing the gold livery and thinking, "Actually, that's not too bad, I don't know why I disliked it". It was the mustard livery in the early races that I disliked. I'd forgotten that they changed the colour to gold at Monaco. Still, I much prefer the bright yellow that they stuck with in subsequent seasons.

Love that Eddie Jordan's reaction to Martin Brundle's Australian GP crash was that the car didn't look good enough on TV!

TJ Preston

Ah the strangest televised Grand Prix ever...

CSF

I got scared it wouldn't come out today
