5 years of The Race - The story so far...

The Race has turned 5 years old! To mark the occasion Edd Straw is joined by the core group that launched the brand for a special podcast looking back on the story so far.

Included are founder and CEO Andrew van de Burgt, editorial director Glenn Freeman, editor-in chief Matt Beer and F1 correspondent Scott Mitchell-Malm.

They explain how The Race came to be, the huge challenge in getting the project off the ground and the early struggles that were overcome, the successes so far, and what the future holds.

Yes - i mean the actual F1 podcast itself (though the extended play version of it on the members only episodes is better). I prefer the MotoGP podcast theme; my personal favourite is the BBV10s one, but the original IndyCar podcast theme music IMHO was a banger and I was not happy when they replaced it 😂

Stuart Coulter

Ha! Do you mean the music from the main F1 pod? Because, I absolutely LOVE the The Race MotoGP podcast's theme tune and get this huge surge of joy every time I hear it. I also love that there is an "extended" (or maybe alternate?) version for the member only podcasts, signaling that we are getting a special edition. Can't honestly say I've heard the main podcast theme, or any of the others... being strictly two wheels in my racing preferences, so I can't compare the other music, but the MotoGP pod music is great.

awinthum

Hi Gareth, you can send it to contactus@the-race.com and we can make sure it gets to him!

The Race

Is it possible to email Andrew about some of the things discussed in the podcast? I an organiser within the sport of robot combat. Just felt after listening to this episode to maybe contact Andrew about some of the things i do and see if its any interest from the talent POV to him or maybe he could put us in touch with people that may be interested. Not sure the best address if so.

As someone who loves business, I especially enjoyed VdB recounting the story behind how The Race started. Going out on a limb, taking a risk, and having it come off and build into this fantastic avenue for motorsport enthusiasts is a great achievement. Many thanks to all of you at The Race for all of your good work.

I remember a few weeks after the mass Autosport exodus at the end of 2019 wondering "where the hell have all the good writers gone?" Then in early 2020 - BOOM - the triumvirate of Mark Hughes, Edd Straw and Scott Mitchell appearing on something called "The Race", with its own podcast and website. Wasn't mad about the theme tune (confession: I'm still not, to be honest 😬) but everything else I enjoyed - since then I am 99% sure I've listened to every F1, Gary Anderson Show/F1 Tech Show, MotoGP, Formula E, IndyCar and (obviously) BBV10s episode (second confession - I didn't bother with the short lived eSports podcast - sorry). It's been great to see the website and podcasts go from strength to strength - and long may it continue!

Stuart Coulter

Ah, i see definitely listened to those episodes but forgot! How embarrassing!

Daniel Hayes

Scott has actually been on six BBV10 episodes! (Admittedly not for a few years, since Series 7 Episode 7)

Stuart Coulter

Daniel Hayes

I discovered The Race through the sim racing during lockdown. Some of those races were amazing! If you ever fancy a *massive* detour for BBV10s you could cover the Button v Alonso Indy500! Paul Page could be the special guest!

Daniel Hayes

I came across the BBV10 show on Spotify in March of 2020. From there I found all the rest of the podcasts and haven't looked at anything else. I've been hooked on your website, your podcasts and your YouTube videos ever since. The thing that sets you apart from every else is that you're not taking sides. The quality of your publishing in any form is that the story has to be unbiased and objective. You have to be applauded for sticking to your philosophy. I just wish I was a resident of the UK. I would like to to have worked with you guys because frankly speaking, this is not a job but a passion that is only going from strength to strength. Hats off to you all and many many congratulations to everyone at The Race including your families for putting up with you guys during the initial days. In my opinion, I think that in a way you guys would be complete as a publication if you could include WSBK, WEC, WRC and EWC with maybe a hint of Irish Road Racing. Cheers and a Toast to you all!!

Xerxes Balsara

Congratulations! I am a self confessed pirate, rarely laying for things and adblocking most of the internet. EXCEPT The Race because I value it so much and am more than happy to pay. I love the in-depth, geek levels of analysis, and insightful discussions. It rekindles the excitement of getting Autosport or F1 Racing and reading every last word as a kid. Thanks for all your work and here's to another 5 years and beyond!

Keir Thomas

I just want to say thank you. I follow you since day 1 and it was like coming home. You're going in the kind of tiny Details that i always missed anywhere else.

Ben

Congratulations on 5 years of the race. This was a delightful listen and insight I really enjoyed hearing. I've been listening since early 2020 with the sound of your voices accompanying me during the very long Melbourne lockdowns. I eagerly anticipate every new pod release and love the great community that has been fostered around The-Race.

Ben Johnson

This was brilliant guys, you have changed the landscape of journalism. You are the best

Hayden Hodgson

Happy birthday to The Race! Thanks all for your continued hard work and commitment to quality Motorsport journalism

Noel George

Apologies. It might have been the first name I butchered on The Race F1 Podcast, but definitely not the last. I usually try and make sure I get them right but do trip up more than I would like!

Edd Straw

Great stuff on the anniversary episode. Such great five years. I can honestly and wholeheartedly confirm that I’ve listened to all of the episodes of the f1 podcast, BBV10, Colossally and the mini series as well as most of the tech show. Fantastic work and please keep it up. ❤️ And yes - please do something great for the 500th f1 episode. ☺️

Marvin Wehren

I found you guys during the pandemic and never looked back. Great team of professionals, great content and non of the silly bullshit of all those other wannabes. Keep up the good work everyone

Hanif Kardan

I don’t even know how I found The-Race (don’t forget the hyphen) it’s just always feels like it’s been around! Happy 5 year anniversary looking forward to seeing how the next 5 goes!

Kyle

Great episode, and congratulations. Well done on creating this amazing F1 Community. I also love the idea of asking questions about The-Race for a 500th pod. My questions would Centre on your extremely slick videos. There's some amazing editing going on. I'm interested in learning more about the Computer drawn cars models that often feature in the video and where they are sourced from / who draws them.

Michael Holden

I assume he was reading my Twitter handle to give him the benefit of the doubt as there's no apostrophes allowed there 😅 He pronounced O'Donnell something like o-don-elle but with equal stress on all syllables and open at the end. It made my name sound very exotic!

George O'Donnell

How did Edd butcher your name?? 😬

The Race

Really interesting hearing the backstory of The Race. It was concerning that the creation coincided with the pandemic, and you all did so well getting through it. I read Autosport from around 1991 when I was 13 until shortly after it was bought over. I followed Edd, Mark Hughes and Jon Noble on twitter when The Race started so it’s great to have them all in the one place again. Congratulations on 5 years!

Mark Gentleman

Happy Birthday and Thank you for taking that leap! As a newer fan to F1 (circa '21 ) you have been a staple in my life and an integral part of my deeper understanding of the sport. Being a member for a year now has enhanced my enjoyment tremendously and I appreciate all of the content you put out (I am almost done season 9 of BBV10s after starting from season 1 episode 1) I feel lucky to be a fan in today's time with being able to enjoy it so much with help of professionals like yourselves. Keep up all the great work cause we always need more!

Stephen Rucco

Happy 5th birthday! I had a question answered on the very first episode of The Race podcast on 18th January 2020, although Edd managed to butcher my name! Not sure how to attach a screenshot here but the question was "which drivers are on the proverbial 'hot seat' this year?"

George O'Donnell

Love this podcast!! Thanks for all the background info. Keep up the great work!!

Jessica Bennett

I've been following The Race since day one, and quite frankly today I can't imagine following F1 without you by my side. Being a journalist myself, I especially have great admiration for how you guys succeeded in creating a new and - in my opinion - unequalled independent platform for high-quality reporting in these uncertain times. Here's to you, Glenn, Edd, Scott, Mark, Matt, Ben, Jon and all your collegues. Thank you, and long may you run!

Davy Coolen

Howdy fellow MotoGP fan :)

Cardiff Giant

Thanks for this! Quite interesting to hear the origins about this. Just remember seeing some tweets before launch time, and followed along. Have all but pretty much dropped Autosport since roll-out. Just regarding Scott’s stats - has Karun made more GP starts than pos appearances…?? 🤔😁

Neil Condie

I had no idea who any of you were when this started, but I also had just started watching F1. My first race was Germany 2019, and it definitely set an unrealistic expectation for what each F1 race would be like but The Race’s coverage has kept me more interested during periods of domination than I think I would’ve been otherwise. So thanks and keep up the good work. :-)

Ethan Putman

Well done on what sounds like a hell of a ride. Because Covid is so hazy, I can't actually remember how I came across The Race, but I think it might have been around the time the season eventually kicked off maybe? Not sure... Some point in 2020/21 feels about right. Though I do use the site, it feels like the pod was the way I got into your stuff, and it's still the main way I access what you're doing. There are so many races now, I think I was just looking for a place to keep across what matters and to tune out the fluff. The Race is the perfect combo of up to date news and depth, it's easy to access wherever you are, and the addition of BBv10s is the icing on the cake (imho of course!)

Steve D

Really enjoyed this podcast (as I do all of them!) - thanks & Happy Birthday! A few podcasts exploring the careers of the team (edit: for clarity - I mean the staff @ The Race) would be great in the future, please. :)

Andy

F1 content is also the best on the web, but it's not MotoGP :P

Jason Fry

Happy birthday! Thanks especially for all your MotoGP content. The best on the web (IMHO).

Jason Fry

I remember when The Race started up. Edd was my favourite journalist on Autosport for many years - I remember when he disappeared from Autosport thinking "oh, that's a shame" and then he popped up reminding us about a hyphen. I think I listened to the first podcast on the day it was released, but I definitely listened to the second one. You've done well to get established in a short space of time, especially with the 2020 backdrop. Listening to this podcast, you're authentic and there's love - love for the sport, love for great journalism, love for your Autosport grounding, love for taking the piss out each other, love for the correct number of cylinders on an engine. And that's reciprocated by us listeners.

Simon Emms

Happy Birthday! In this world of click bait you guys are the only source i completely trust. Thank you for being awesome!

Nick

I've followed The Race from the start. It was a top team to begin with and only top people have joined since! You maintain a high intellectual level in analysis and arguments, and that makes all the difference to me. Thanks, and keep it up :)

Johan L

Happy birthday!

Scuderia Irish

Thanks for doing this, it's fun. I followed the gang over from autosport straight away and it's nice to hear the story behind all of it.

Jordan Stover

Happy Birthday to The Race! Thank you for your exceptional coverage. I had just discovered F1 and was diving in when my life was upended in 2023 by a car accident that left me with a Frank Williams esque spinal cord injury. Your articles and podcast archive became more than entertainment—they gave me a needed distraction and time sink during many hours in hospital. A birthday is as good a time as any to say thank you!
