What race from the BBV10s era sticks in the memory the most and why?

Hatman

Tyres are hugely complex things, not just black and round. Things like sidewall stiffness affects suspension settings, design and geometry along with aero loading etc.

Cardiff Giant

Hard one to quanitfy, given drivers are at the mercy of their teams adaptation to new rules. The only real comparison is their team mate then. You could say to name 2, that Villeneuve and Panis never achieved the same results post 97 as they did before. But a lot of that is because their teams had good cars prior to the 98 regs, and bad cars after. I know for sure, Damon Hill is on that list though. Certainly the 1999 regs with the 4 groove front tyre, he has since admitted he never got on top of.

Cardiff Giant

Apologies if I missed this (Relatively new member), but Im curious about Senna and where he would have driven after 1994 had he not passed away. I've heard that he had a contract offer from Ferrari for 1995 (Julian Jakobi) I've heard that he was offered a 50% stake in the Jordan team if he signed for them (Eddie Jordan) Finally, I've heard that he wanted to drive for Minardi in his final season (Giancarlo Minardi) So, realistlcally, given he was 34 at the time of his death. Would he have stayed with Williams while they were dominant and gone out as a 4, 5 or 6 time champion? Or would he have moved?

Cardiff Giant

If you presented the car regs from maybe the mid 90s to a current team, how much faster would they go?

Jared Madsen

Listening to the Panis episode this morning, reminded me of a question I’ve had about tyres - why did Goodyear switch from white to yellow text in the tyres from 1992 to 1993?

Simon

Why were there white tags on the surface of tyres for much of the V10 era? I presume these were ID labels, but wouldn't they affect the grip levels and wouldn't be too difficult to rip off. I did like how the PlayStation games simulated them though.

Simon Emms

I'd like to hear about the less remembered Bridgestone issue at Monaco, which is where they suddenly dropped off... maybe a 2003 tyres episode!

CSF

If Eddie Jordan was still the Jordan team boss at Indy 2005, would the weekend have played out differently? Would Jordans agreement with Minardi to not race have stuck, and if so, would the race have gone ahead with just 2 cars?

Richard Buggy

I think the latter.

Cardiff Giant

I’ve seen and heard several comments about certain drivers not adapting particularly well to the current ground effect cars and it got me thinking. Were there any drivers who adapted particularly poorly to the narrow track cars in ‘98, or vice versa?

Trailmixup

In a previous episode from the Race, Gary mentioned that Ferrari often had a one-second lap time advantage solely due to their Bridgestone tyres. How was this possible? I understand that Ferrari and Bridgestone worked closely to develop tyres optimised for their car, while midfield and backmarker teams had to use what was provided. But were there actual differences in the compounds, and how could the performance gap be so large?

Dara Peyton

No question here, I just wanted to point out that I'm still waiting for a 2003 Michelin tyre regulation change episode from the very first end of season Q&A you did, you promised a whole episode about it and I'm still patiently waiting 🫣

Rol4nd86

Would you agree that 1994 was potentially the busiest season in terms of driver changes from start to finish? On my calculations, no fewer than 46 drivers tried to qualify for at least one race, and there were no less than 37 individual driver changes (including times a driver was replaced for at least one race and then came back again, e.g. Mansell for Coulthard at Magny-Cours, and DC then returning for Silverstone). I don't think there's ever been a season like it, and I doubt we'll see a driver market as busy and volatile as this ever again!

Scott Woodwiss

Did F1 ever look at “artificial” means to improve the racing/on track action (like DRS or IndyCar’s P2P system) in the V10 era? If not, should they have? Though there are lots of great races to look back on, on balance I’d say the racing wasn’t usually very great in a lot of this era. With a “ringmaster” like Bernie always trying to generate interest (and money), you’d think devices to improve the racing would be right up his alley.

Max Camposano

Given how good Kimi Raikkonen was at Spa in his McLaren years, if the Belgian GP wasn't cancelled in 2003 could it have swung a very close title battle his way?

Mathew McCarthy

I hope this gets seen as I realise this post is rapidly dropping down the list. But if it has not been done already, will you ever do an episode on the Bologna Auto Show Indoor F1 Trophy race that was held between 1988 and 1996? It was the only time Andrea Moda was competitive, and had the likes of Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fischicella driving 1996 Benettons around a car park (and in the case of Trulli, crashing it).

Cardiff Giant

If you could record a BBV10s episode with any F1-related guest of your choosing (up to you on whether they have to still be alive), which race weekend would you pick and who would you want to join you?

sabrina

I once saw a rumour that has since been debunked that Simtek were lined up to make a comeback during 1995 after their initial withdrawal after a few races, but with Mugen-Honda engines and effectively as a Benetton "B-team", all of which being allegedly influenced by Flavio Briatore and Benetton sponsor Bitburger beer. A test was even claimed to have happened with the Mugen-Honda engine fitted to an S951 driven by Jos Verstappen at Silverstone. Even though none of this ever happened, how do you think a Simtek return with Mugen Honda power and Benetton support would have gone, how much more competitive could it have been, and would it have helped sustain the team for a few more seasons at least? Here's the link to the website talking about the rumour (one I'm sure Edd Straw would love to peruse if he hasn't already!) https://www.unracedf1.com/debunked-simtek-mugen-honda/

Scott Woodwiss

What was the most impressive outside-the-points finish (ie 7th or below) in the BBV10s era?

Chris Bennett

how would the v10s era look like if it had the f2 champion cannot stay on rule applied would we get some outstanding world champions like button at BAR much earlier, on a side note Williams were basically playing by these rules for fun

The Lync

The banning of "tractor brakes" always annoyed me. They were legal, were (by F1 standards) inexpensive, and contrary to what many believe, several teams had their own system. But no, it gets banned. (Places tine foil hat on head) this is the one time I do genuinely believe Ferrari used their veto, even if the FIA denied it. (Removes tin foil hat)

Mark Riccetti Jr

My question is which technical development path do you feel could have worked, if only it had a proper budget and/or a major name behind it? I still say a W12 engine layout like MGN and Life built and tested in the late '80s could have worked if someone like Cosworth or Ferrari tried. And yes, obviously there are good reasons why they never did, but still it's fun to wonder about.

Mark Riccetti Jr

I always heard it was because Toyota wanted a V12, which woke Ferrari back up.....

Mark Riccetti Jr

Does Damon Hill do a better job than Jacques Villeneuve in 1997 if he stayed at Williams? Would he have claimed the title or would the Williams drivers being more closely matched and taking points off one and other allow Schumacher to clinch it.

CH

Oooh he Ron speaks good

Matthew Pope

If David Coulthard had stayed at Williams for 1996, would Jacques Villeneuve have made it to F1 and if so, who with and when? (I really got into F1 in 1997 so the idea of DC being at Williams is always something that felt wrong to me somehow, it doesn't fit at all!)

SnookerMatt

Which race had the potential to be an all time classic but was ruined by an accident, a mechanical failure, a driver error etc.? Examples that come to my mind are USA 2000 and Japan 95 (Hakkinen & Alesi retired just as they were hunting down MSC)

Μάριος Γαντζούδης

Ah, but Brabham had better facilities (thanks to Gordon Murray)

Hugh

What rule changes over the course of the V10 era outstayed their welcome the most. Refuelling and grooved tyres were fairly universally unpopular but persisted for 15 years and 10 years respectively. Aggregate qualifying by comparison was hastily dumped after 6 races but could have succeeded (or failed less) with some tweaks, such as running both sessions back to back on a Saturday rather than Q2 on a Sunday morning. What bad ideas stayed around too long, and what good ideas* (if any) weren't given enough of a shot? *note I am not suggesting aggregate qualifying was a good idea! 😂 but it was abandoned quickly

Jake Muttitt

This is a sprawling question, but what would the shape of the V10 era be if Michael Schumacher didn't exist. The whole era revolved around him. Surely Benetton never win a title, Damon Hill ends up a 4-time world champion by default and Frentzen never moves to Williams, possibly heading to Ferrari instead? Ferrari have no superstar to rebuild around in the late 90s so who leads the team into the 21st century? And how many of the 00-04 titles do they end up sweeping?

Jake Muttitt

This sort of got answered by Edd in a answer your questions episode I think. The driver pool was quite thin so a competitive driver wasn't available. Verstappen (Jos) proved to be disappointing, whilst Ferrari had already swept for Salo almost immediately after the British gp. Options were former tester De La Rosa, but Arrows would have wanted paying and Jordan almost certainly wasn't going to do that. I would have gone for a punt on Nakano, since Hill was off the boil anyway and Nakano was the test driver.

Dr Ballsack

Yeah I think you’re right Thomas. Those are probably the biggest ones

Liam Scully

Of course hahaha, goes without saying I suppose

Liam Scully

or the 2003 only allowed one type of wets, 2005 qualifying where the final session was on Sunday morning? The going from slicks to grooved tyres would be up there too

Thomas Knights

Very interesting read! Obviously all drivers have their preferences for buttons, clutch positioning etc but it's just the fact that their steering wheels were different versus everybody else who had the same time rim Thanks

MrIceColdAndy 23

He was quick. To the point Briatore tried pressing him into signing a test contract right there and then. However, if you look at his CART career, I suspect his time in F1 would have gone the same way. Blindingly quick at times, but too many careless mistakes. He was also hot headed, and he and Briatore would not have lasted 5 minutes.

Cardiff Giant

Forti!!!!

Cardiff Giant

I imagine like 1997, it would have been Irvine running light to get past, then backing Mika into the pack.

Cardiff Giant

Without sounding like a conspiracy theorist, will it ever emerge that the litany of mechanical failures that Barrichello had while team mates with Schumacher at Ferrari were intentional? Rewatching the early 2000's, it's alarming the amount of times that Rubens car either wont start on the grid (like France 2002 I believe) or breaks down in a race with an 'electrical issue' like in Brazil. Schumacher, however, had none that I recall in this era. It never happened with Irvine, or after Barrichello left for the most part, so it seems unbelievable to me that Ferrari could not run 2 cars reliably.

Cardiff Giant

This question is not the panacea of questions, that Matthew believes it to be :D

Cardiff Giant

I can answer some of that. I worked at Mclaren in '01 on work experience in the electrical harness dept, so making and testing all the wiring harnesses along with other integrated systems like the steering wheels. As you noted, DC and MH had completed different wheels and it essentially boils down to driver preference. Mika had the more rectangular shaped wheel that is now common. DC had a rounded base as he preferred the 'look' of a more traditional wheel at the time. This also ties in with the fact he had a horizontal bar across the top of the wheel joining each side, this was so he could 'see' when the wheel was straight I was told by his race engineer. Here is a good picture: https://cars.bonhams.com/auction/14426/lot/153/david-coulthards-mclaren-mercedes-mp4-13-steering-wheel-used-at-the-1998-san-marino-grand-prix/

Cardiff Giant

Since Leyton House didn't survive, having Newey on board would've hindered Newey more than it would've helped Brabham, I'm afraid.

Philipp Eitzinger

Greg Moore, Gil De Ferran, Bruno Junquira.

Matthew Pope

Tony Purnell and I think F1 racing magazine had a proposal to turn qualifying into two mini races with random draws in the first race and final positions based on finishing order in the second race, would this have been more interesting than single lap qualifying?

David Edwards

Ron went in to see 50 Shades of Grey and you know he was annoyed about it being flagrant false advertising…

Matthew Pope

Worst one - clearly the abandonment of V10’s!!!!

Matthew Pope

That's an episode in itself 😂

Disc Infiltrator

Badoer, then Minardi ends up with Sarrazin

Disc Infiltrator

This was talked about in a previous episode!

Disc Infiltrator

Why did BAR, and not Jordan, get the factory Honda deal for 2000 (especially considering both teams' 1999 form)?

Hugh

Well, a certain A. Newey was offered a job there for '87 . . .

Hugh

That is an optimal question I rate it 5 grey paint swatches out of 5

Hugh

Q2: Williams in 1994 and 1995 feels like the obvious answer.

Chris Bennett

Not an answer to the question, but my favourite thing about BBV10s is that it's basically Pit & Paddock brought to life.

Chris Bennett

Good point, had forgotten Eddie got some money for putting him in the car

David Saiya

Which seasons had the best and worst crop of rookies? 1995 must be the worst - Bouillon, Papis, Magnussen, Diniz and Lavaggi. Which lesser-known broadcasters of the era deserve recognition along with the likes of Murray, Hunt and Brundle? Simon Taylor, Maurice Hamilton and John Watson were all excellent. If seasons had been 24 races long as they are now, rather than 15-17 meetings, which seasons would most likely have had different champions?

Chris Bennett

If Gary is on it or if any of you know. What was the reason for Alesi's steering wheel grip versus other drivers? Also, if you know, what was the reason for Barrichello's slightly elevated left hand position in his early Ferrari years (2000-02 especially)? Another question, why did Coulthard and Hakkinen have completely different steering wheels relative to other teammates from 1998-2001?

MrIceColdAndy 23

I'm gonna say he gets his F1 break anyways with Jordan when Eddie is desperate for cash towards the end of 1991! He just changes to Benetton a few races later than it did in real life

Disc Infiltrator

Good question! Had Salo gone to Jordan, who replaces Schumacher?

Chris Casabianca

I agree. Obviously I don’t know him. But media always push this narrative of being so grounded etc. is that true? He comes across as extremely arrogant to me - expected a say in driver decisions at Williams. Threw his toys and left - wouldn’t work in the structure McLaren set up so again left Wasn’t happy at red bull because they didn’t basically credit all the success down to him and wanted to praise the whole team Whenever the rules go a way he isn’t so fussed on he wants to go yachting Not to say he isn’t a genius or worth being given preferential treatment but don’t see or hear of other designers having the same demands as he does

Aled Davies

So Betrand Gachot doesn't have his incident with the taxi driver and Jordan don't need a replacement driver for Spa in 91. If/How/When does Michael Schumacher get his break in F1? Does he come in with Sauber in 93 or would another team have snapped him up? Does Nelson Piquet stay for 92 alongside Martin Brundle? Do Benetton still have success without Michael Schumacher? or does he find his way to the team anyway?

David Saiya

Apologies if asked before! FWIW, I agree with your view. More competitive yes, but not breaking into the top 6 or so.

Davinho

What was the worst & best rule change of the era?

Liam Scully

Hypothetical one. Say Damon Hill retires at the British gp in 1999 and Jordan have arranged a replacement beforehand (perhaps a mika salo), or somebody else who is much more competitive than Hill was. Would a much more competitive teammate have aided the Frentzen title bid at the stage of the season by potentially taking points off Hakkinen and Irvine or would it have made no difference? (Eoin is pronounced like Owen btw)

Eoin Troy

I have a four part question for the panel It came to my attention on a recent episode of Formula for Success (the Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard podcast ) that Eddie Jordan was sniffing around for Newley’s signature. Obviously it never came off as 500k wasn’t going to cut it and Newey went to McLaren. But what if newey had thought “im gonna stick with Damon Hill” they both go to Jordan in 1997 and Newey signed with them for 2-3 years 1. How would this change affect the course of history particularly 1998 season- my gut says Ferrari would prevail but I think we could have had a much more interesting season (McLaren has weaker chassis but still has the beryllium  engine which sees them challenge earlier on) (Ferrari win Races in the mid part of the season) and Jordan win multiple races at the end of the season once the mugen is engine is sorted) what does the panel think of my hypothesis 2. Whilst I still think age, motivation and dislike of groove tyres still hampers Hills final season in 1999 does his form nosedive to the same degree in an Adrian Newey design chassis? ( or would his previous experience with newey cars and extra wins in 97 and 98 made him more motivated and competitive 3. Assuming the 1999 on form version of Frentzen has access to a newey design chassis you would have to imagine he becomes 1999 world champion. Would his title victory in 1999 be a one off anomaly or would the confidence boost been enough for Frentzen to go from being an on his day merchant to being a top level consistent challenger and realise his potential? 4. Would Newey alone have been enough to Keep Jordan A. Competitive and B on the Grid for longer? Or were they always doomed to their eventual fate without big manufacturers money entering the team for the record it was asked for last season but I’m not sure if it didn’t make the cut purely from a to many questions perspective or if the questions were simply not quite good enough. I won’t repeatedly ask forever as I don’t want to annoy anyone is this wonderful group but I thought I’d try I’d chance it because I think they good questions

Simracer Sam

Shame it never happened, just for all the childish mention of "Wankel" we could have had.

Simon Emms

Good first questions. Please ask more in future. I tend to think that Mika dropped to just above the level of his opposition. If The Michael hadn't been injured, they'd have fought hard. Rubens was of a higher level than Eddie, so I suspect Mika would have dropped less but still won.

Simon Emms

Edd will say Leyton House. For me, I'd love Aston Martin to revert to the Jordan name and then go on there 26 rampage in a yellow car with a hornet on the front. But I'm a hopeless romantic.

Simon Emms

Damon beat Jacques in 96, Jacques beat HHF in 97/98, HHF beat Damon in 99 making Damon Hill better than Damon Hill. What's the silliest version of this sequence you can make?

Simon Emms

Can we please have a top ten list of Ron-Speak?

Matthew Pope

What is your most memorable driver interview at a post race press conference during the V10 era? I'd have to go for Morbidelli at the 1995 Australian grand prix, it was like Live at the Apollo!

Sean Murphy

Which Champ Car/IndyCar champion do you think deserved a shot in F1?

Rachel Hillman

What sort of game plan would Ferrari have had for the 1998 Japanese GP, if Schumacher hadn't stalled on the grid? Winning the race with Hakkinen second (i.e. the grid order) would not have been enough for Schumacher to take the title (he would have lost on countback). So would Schumacher have just driven off at the front and hoped that either Hakkinen hit a problem or Irvine could pull off some sort of miracle without any intervention from him, or would he have attempted to back Hakkinen into the pack or pull some other sort of shenanigans to drop him to the 3rd place or lower he needed him to be in to take the title?

Patrick

Simple question; who was the best team principal during the v10 era?

Jason Rhode

After Eddie Irvine’s 99 title bid, I remember hearing about him receiving a letter from a crazed super fan who offered to set up a sniper rifle at Suzuka to shoot out one of Hakkinen’s tyres to make it seem like a puncture. I’d love to hear more about this if you have any info!

Chris Casabianca

Did Mclaren have any trust in David Coulthard in the late 90's?there was offers on the table for Hill to join in 98 and Jacques Villeneuve for 99 & 00. Coulthard out performed Mika in 97 (on points). But arguably his 98 & 99 were disappointing. It seemed rumours of his seat being up for grabs on went away mid 2000

Joe Moore

Other than signing and then selling Kimi, what was the best thing Sauber did in the V10 era? (sportingly, technically, operationally, driver wise, etc.)

Colin Gallagher

I'd love to hear more on the FIA/FOTA split and only half the teams being given licences to race for the following season. Perhaps a BBV8 episode?

Adam Barton

Would Ferrari have dropped Barrichello out of the points in the 2003 Japanese GP to guarantee Schumacher the title? What would the reaction having been in the height of team orders scandal?

Adam Barton

What was wrong with the 2000s Jordans? Gary's mentioned an incorrect aero philosophy before but what was the specific issue?

Michael Maclean

While we no longer have Ron Dennis, Frank Williams around today, having old teams like McLaren and Williams still in the paddock makes F1 a richer experience, as that maintains an important link to the history of the sport, almost like football teams. What team from the v10 era would you like to see relaunched into the 2025 franchise era of F1, and why?

Steve D

Seeing what Ligier did with it, and seeing the big gulf between Ligier and Minardi that season, I don't think Minardi would have done much better. Maybe they'd have finished a bit ahead of what they did but not by much. Also I think this question was tackled before

Disc Infiltrator

I remember much of the v10 era seeing f1 lurch from one existential crisis to another. Difficult relations between the FIA and FOCA (imagine!), potential manufacturer/Ferrari breakaway series, increasing popularity of Indy/CART, the sudden loss of a generation of World champions (Senna, Prost, Mansell, Piquet), unpopular regulation changes... What would you say was the most credible threat to F1 failing to exist today, at least in its current form?

Dave Smith

Rewind to 1997 and Goodyear don’t announce their F1 retirement until some time during 1998. Assuming all current Goodyear teams cannot make the switch to Bridgestone for 1998, how does this affect the championship? Does McLaren still pull ahead or does Ferrari use its political weight to get Goodyears tailor made for their car and it is enough to get Schumi across the line?

Mark Andrews

If Michael Schumacher's 1999 accident was career-ending, how would it have affected Ferrari's early 2000s? Who would've been Barrichello's team-mate in 2000, and would anyone else than Michael have been able to beat Mika to the drivers' title that year? And without Michael, would the subsequent period of domination still been possible?

Anssi Rulamo

Given the recent end of 70 years of weekly Autosport magazine editions , I would interested to hear what impact the panel thinks Autosport had on the V10 era? (Also any comment as ex-employees would interesting too)

Andrew Dale

I'll give you my own answer! 1) Kimi Raikkonen (although he got it later) 2) Ivan Capelli, France 1990 3) Alex Caffi, US Grand Prix 1989 where he was taken out by his own teammate 4) (deserved a point?) Luca Badoer at the 1999 European GP

Disc Infiltrator

Great questions!

Kieron

How much thought, if any, did teams give to the size of their fuel tanks in the refuelling era? After Mika Salo's successful non-stop strategy at Monaco 1997, did anyone ever try something similar again, or design a big enough tank to give them that opportunity?

Robert Charlton

When the Brazilian GP changed in 1990 from Rio to Sao Paulo, was this also a definitive change in allegiance from Brazil from Piquet towards Senna? What was the reason, if not this, for the change of location anyway (or was it just money)? Also, if you allow me a second question on the topic, how quickly did Senna get more populair in Brazil than Piquet. I assume Piquet was their main man up til at least the middle of the eighties.

Jurre Hindriks

What would happen happen if Minardi did use the Mugen Honda engines in 1995? The car was originally designed for it, and throughout the season the chassis was pretty good. Would Martini and Badoer be regular point scorers (getting Luca off that unwanted record) or would the season still pan out the same? Keep up the great content.

Davinho

Between re-appearing on the grid in 1989 and disappearing forever halfway through 1992 - was there ever any possibility to realistically save Brabham from drowning and where does the Landhurst fraud scandal rank among all the shady ways that sunk F1 teams?

Philipp Eitzinger

I know that Paul Tracy tested for Benetton in mid-1994 but don't know much about his performance during that test. How quick was he and how likely was it that Benetton would attempt to hire him?

Mark Martin

Hot damn. *If*, and that is a massive if, they had went with a rotary engine, it might have given enough for Mazda to figure out a way to make a rotary engine feasible for mass market adoption.

Tarran Sanders

I’d add another layer to that question aswell if you exclude the 2021 (the human error championship) red bull has yet to win a single title when there hasn’t been an engine freeze

Simracer Sam

But why not Mild Seven? Everyone else had tobacco sponsorship. No amount of googling and autocourse 95 reading has answered my ridiculously niche question 😂 best of luck Glenn and the team!

Alisdair Bowie

Hi first time asking I'll try two short ones😅. If Ruben's gets signed a season earlier and Michael has te same injury in Silverstone does Ruben's win the championship instead of Mika? Which cars from the V10 era wasted a championship caliber wining engine? Can't say williams with BMW

Andrés Bastanchuri

Moby - Lift me Up, weird remix of “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” or The Chain?

JohnnyO

Ever since season 1 I've heard you all mention something was definitely a Ron Dennis saying whenever you mention something he says, so what are you favorite Ron Dennis sayings?

Ed R Gaming

Rumour always had it, that the reason for mandating the V10 engine formula was that McLaren and Mercedes were looking into a rotary configuration. How much truth was there to this?

Keir

I’d choose Wendlinger. Just a shame he got hurt then came back too soon

sikloy

Which pre 1989 track would you have loved to see stay on the calendar into the V10 era, perhaps with modifications to safety and/or infrastructure? Alternatively, which track that came close but never made the calender in the V10 era would you have liked to see included?

Jan Alexander

Can you shed any light on the telemetry battle in the late 90s and early 2000s where teams were scrambling to set up antennas and the like around the circuit? And maybe a brief touch on how it all came to a head, with the teams coming together with the FIA to standardize data collection during races? Even though that dips into the V8 era ;)

Joe MacInnes

Also, what have been your favourite races to look back on with hindsight and watch with data, lap times, team radio etc that wasn’t available at the time?

Joe MacInnes

Yeah it was hard to put him down on my little list thing. I'm massive Schumacher fan but he also said at the end of his career that he was insecure and that's what drove him. So I don't know

Jordan Stover

What parallels would you guys draw from preseasons in the V10 era to this one in 2025? Whether it’s about the level of competitiveness, the balance of development the year before a significant (maybe the biggest ever) rule change, or something else entirely…

Joe MacInnes

Ah yes, I do remember the Aiello discussion

JohnnyO

Which is your favourite BBV10s episode so far and why?

Peter Selecký

Which V10 season do you think has the best storylines?

Peter Selecký

I doubt Shumacher (Micheal) would have given 2 s**** about what people on the Internet thought of him. He certainly didn't in the early 2010s.

Dr Ballsack

Hearing Herbert's description of it in BBV10s was chilling enough.

Dr Ballsack

Nah, not happening. The part would have had a catastrophic failure even if Head had somehow bent it back into shape.

Dr Ballsack

This got answered IIRC. Edd mentioned that Menu tested for Wiliams a bit for 1993, but his neck couldn't last for very long. Mark Hughes said that Laurent Aiello was very fast for Mclaren on 1994, but suffered the same as Menu. Rydell is the interesting one. He had a collapsed lung at the start of 94(?) and only initially did BTCC as a stopgap. Edd did a brilliant interview with him back in his Autosport days which is easily googleable. As for Radisich, he got blown away by Hill in F3 when they were teammates, so...

Dr Ballsack

I'd definitely second Christian Fittipaldi, after a difficult 1992 he was right on the pace in 1993 and '94. Pierluigi Martini was well past his best by 1995 IMO but I think in the early 90s he deserved a shot in a faster car, he sometimes brought that Minardi further up the grid than it should have been. I've often thought David Brabham deserved another shot, while he looked out of his depth in 1990 he looked much stronger in 1994 and regularly outpaced his Brabham team mates by a fair margin. Not sure about Nicola Larini, he struggled at Sauber in '97 and although he did finish second at Imola '94, when I look at the times I reckon he was at least half a second per lap off Gerhard Berger.

Ian Simpson

Which incident from the BBV10S era would you like most to have heard the team radio from? Michael Schumacher and the Benetton pit wall in 1994 at Silverstone comes to mind

Liam Spires

I wish there was a camera angle that showed the Alesi-Brundle collision at Brazil 1992. We only see them coming out from behind the wall, by which time the collision has already happened. I'd be interested to see how far alongside Martin got and how near the corner he was when Jean hit him and knocked him into the wall. It could have been a racing incident, or it could have been Alesi defending too aggressively because the pair of them didn't get on back then, I suspect probably the latter but without seeing it I'll never be sure.

Ian Simpson

Bit of fun: What single race in the V10 era do you have the fondest memories of, which one would you sell your left kidney to forget? Love the series, keep up the good work.

Jasper Pendlebury

Why is there not more discussion of F1 designers, it seems everyone just talks about Newey and no one else. There is a lot of god making of Newey given he has a history of getting beaten by other great designers E.g Rory Burne, whose 94&95 Bennetons beat the Williams and not to mention the Ferrari years where McLaren had no answers. I also feel we give him a pass for the hybrid era, especially the 19-21 years when they had the Honda engines, especially 2020 where Merc just dominated and if not for the floor change regulations probably would have won 21 in a similar fashion.

Nevin Knowles

Paul Page in his Dinner with Racers episode mentions off hand that Sly was seen at various F1 races beforehand, but I have a feeling Bernie saw the type of people that were apart of the production of Driven and told them to pound sand - and CART was desperate for a leg up on the IRL during the Split, so they took it.

Tarran Sanders

Is there any CART drivers from the period of the V10 era that would have succeeded if they had made the jump? Discounting the ones that did.

Tarran Sanders

Renault on the Benetton was due to a milestones of Renault powered poles I believe, which they had achieved the day before. Always been curious about Ltd on the Williams too.

Brendan Queenan

What was the reason behind Williams using ‘Rothmans Ltd’ in 94 and a different Rothmans logo when racing in Canada? The Benetton in 1995 also had ‘Moto Sport’ on one day and Renault stickers the next, what was all that about?

Alisdair Bowie

Related to this, I'm always amazed that there was never any serious pitlane accidents considered the accidents we've seen since speed limits were introduced.

Simon Emms

If you could take a screaming Ferrari V12 from the era and put it in another car as a free-of-charge customer engine, which car would you choose? It could be for a team that you want to give some extra horsepower to move them up the grid, or it could for example be a V8 car of the period that you feel deserves a more iconic soundtrack

Jamie Willis

If you could create your ultimate V10 era calendar, what would it be? Rules are you have a maximum 16 races to match a typical calendar size of the era, and give thought to placement in the calendar for the races “traditional” slot E.g Suzuka as an early round in 2024 just felt wrong Mine would be: 1.Melbourne 2.Interlagos 3.Imola 4.Monaco 5.Canada 6.Mexico (with the original Peraltada) 7.Paul Ricard (without the headache-Inducing blue lines) 8.Silverstone (1991 layout purely for Bridge corner) 9.Hockenheim (pre-conversion to a shorter circuit) 10.Hungary 11.Spa 12.Monza 13.Estoril 14.Malaysia 15.Suzuka 16.Adelaide Jerez and Indy got close to my list, and Kyalami got some thought too

Richard Snape

Social media question: If social media had been around in that era. Which drivers from the V10 era would thrive with social media and which drivers do you think it would affect? I think Mansell, Senna, Villeneuve, and Montoya would love the platform and the opportunity to sensationalize their opinion. While Schumacher, Prost, Ron Dennis, and Damon Hill would find it a distraction or even be more sensitive to it than they might let on.

Jordan Stover

Any chance we might see an episode of BBV10s that covers the 88 Portuguese GP? More Leyton House goodness, gives Glen a chance to get out his Leyton House shirt, and ‘88 was almost the V10 era!

Clay Woolcock

Build your team: one current driver and one from the V10 era plus a team boss and a technical guru, also one of each from V10/current. Who would you pick for your time-hopping crew and why? If you want to expand on the idea (time dependent), it could be fun to go further and pick more items split between the eras, like a title sponsor, livery, third driver, engine supplier, etc.

Will

Strong question for an audio medium: what's your favourite still image from the V10 era?

Andrew Sillett

Slight tangential question What was the reason for Sylvester Stallone not going ahead with his proposed F1 film in the late 90s? Had the frankly awful "Driven" (or "Drivel" as I call it) been about F1, rather than CART, would such a flop and critical panning have damaged F1's global reputation/popularity? Whilst I'm not suggesting Driven was the reason why CART ended up failing, I doubt the film helped revive CART's fortunes... (and, as a bonus question, which real-life BBV10s-era F1 drivers would you base the characters of Joe Tanto, Jimmy Bly and Beau Brandenburg on?)

Stuart Coulter

I’d add Paul radisich to that list

Simracer Sam

Outside of the initial unlimited revving v8s and the 19000rev cars I was never really a big fan of the 2.4 v8s from an audio perspective and especially a performance perspective. I can’t remember the exact figures but the teams spent a shed load of money trying to make those tinny v8s competitive in 05/06 Given Mosley imposed an engine freeze in September 2006 anyway. Was the move to v8s an expensive mistake Surely it would have been…. cheaper for teams Better from an audio perspective Better for the racing for being able to push harder for longer If they knocked 4-5 thousand revs off the 2005 v10s and frozen them for 06-13 ? Side note it would have made to the switch to turbo hybrids more jarring 🤣

Simracer Sam

Can you talk about the pitlane speed limit, why it was brought in, how it was received at the time, and how it changed over the V10s period?

Daniel Hayes

During this period of time which team had the most dominant and therefore ominous first race of the season? The first thing that comes to my mind is McLaren in 98 when I think both cars lapped the whole field?

Andy

This question is a question about the origins of the 3.5 litre formula that is the basis of this fantastic podcast series; is/are there political and intriguing stories from the end of the first turbo era around the adoption of the 3.5 litre formula? Why specifically choose 3.5 litre engines as opposed to the previous 3.0 litre engines formula? Was there political machinations behind the scenes at FISA and also with the nascent FOA and the signing of the second Concorde agreement that helped encourage/stoke manufacturer interest in F1 before 1989, especially with Group C presenting as a serious commercial threat to F1 as a motorsport product. All I have been able to find has been about the concern on turbo development power and cost, that 3.5 litre engines would come closer to matching the 1.5 litre turbos than the 3.0 litre engines did, theory which was completely demolished in 1988. For FISA at the time to be so straightforward at the time seems out of character with the organisation.

Alexander Law

Which 1990’s British Touring Car Championship driver would have been the most successful in Formula 1 given a chance? Tarquini, Bouillion, David Brabham and many others took part in F1 with varying degrees of success but what about drivers like Alain Menu, Rickard Rydell, Kelvin Burt and Yvan Muller who all had single seater experience but never made the transition?

JohnnyO

During the V10 era, which driver do you think… A) Most deserved a world title? B) Deserved a race win? C) Deserved a podium? I’d go for Montoya, Brundle and Martini respectively

sikloy

Could F1 have done anything to make the V10 more appealing to the automotive manufacturers and extend the run of the engine formula?

Evan Thomas

Would BMW stayed in F1 if not for the global financial crisis or had the project already run its course?

Evan Thomas

Something about this I’ve wondered is how long did it take to change a suspension and would it have been worth trying just to get Damon back in the race?

Chris Parrott

I have long been a proponent of less data in F1. I know you cant put the ketchup back in the bottle but all this "Close enough to pass in 5 laps by AWS" nonsense sometimes takes the fun and mystery out of F1. If the BBV10s era had such abundent onscreen data (and live timing data) do you think we would remember it as fondly as we do now? Can you think of a race that would have been ruined or perhaps enhanced by having the level of data that we have now?

Ajayrious

What's your favourite grand prix track(s) from the V10s era, and why? [I made the answer potentially plural, as you might want to share the track you think epitomises the V10s era best, and/or your favourite based simply on sentimentality.]

Michael Holden

When discussing which retirement do you wish hadn’t happened (where Glenn shared one of them was Hill Adelaide ‘94) made me think about a situation in that race we never saw. Assuming Patrick Head’s arms were slightly stronger, and they managed to send Hill back out to get the 5th place he needed - do you think Mansell would’ve given up a race win to drop behind Hill if he’d still been leading, with Hill in 6th?

Barney Woodbridge

Name a hitherto unseen V10s era moment (on or off track or from a different angle) that you wish there was footage of. (Mine are that Pedro Lamy testing shunt at Silverstone in 94 just to see exactly how he ended up in that tunnel and Ricardo Rosset’s onboard of the start of the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix).

Chris Parrott

Do you have a favourite episode of BBV10s that comes to mind...? For me it's "the Ridiculous Story of Andrea Moda" - I had virtually no interest in backmarkers until hearing this epic story - now I fully appreciate every team at the front / middle or even right at the back has its own fascinating story, in a way I certainly didn't as a kid enjoying F1 in the late 90s. Might be hard to pick just one, but is there an episode that you love more than most for whatever reason?

OC

Of the V10 era teams / brands that no longer exist ‘in name’ or ‘spirit’ (Ignoring fact teams still exist under new ownership/brand etc ie minardi/vcarb) pick 3 teams you would like to see back on grid - purely to add colour and soul to the grid ? One of the selection should be a ‘wild card’ option. My example would be proper 92 era Lotus (and sponsor colours), Ligier Renault (Prost as driver /boss , age is just a number !) , and as wild card either Forti or Minardi Lamborghini (V12) .

A Challinor

I've got two. 1. What is anyone's favourite piece of V10s era trivia? (Personal favourite. Despite battling to the end, Schumacher and Villeneuve never stood on the same podium in 1997!) 2. What personal driver numbers to you think V10 legendary drivers would have chosen if the rule came into effect for 1989, not 2014?

Arron Riley

Which grid of cars liveries from the v10 era did the guests like the most, for me it's 2000 the Jaguar green, orange arrows, Williams BMW white and minardi and Jordan yellow but it ahead of 1996

James Melia

What would happen to the driver market for 1991 on if Frank and Patrick couldn't convince Nigel Mansel to reverse his retirement? Would we get a 5 time champion Prost or would Damon hill get his big break? I know they had Jean Alesi under contract, but I think one year and Jean could have been an early HHF at Williams and been let go,

James Melia

How would the Rest of the 1996 Grid have looked like if Alesi and Coulthard had stayed at their teams as team mates to Schumacher and Villeneuve? Was there even a possibility for this and how long do you reckon each pairing would have lasted?

Rohmilchkäse

Which driver(s) from the V10 era do you think deserved a career reprieve? JJ Lehto springs to mind, especially since 1994 he was driving injured. He was in scintillating form in GT1 in 1997, and I would have liked to have seen him back in F1 at this time. He was only in his early 30s at the time and could have done something in the right team. Honorable mentions also go to Christian Fittipaldi, Nicola Larini and Perluigi Martini.

Dr Ballsack

If Adrian Newey had stayed with Williams for 1998-1999, would Williams have been able to challenge for the titles with the Mecachrome/Supertec engines?

Sam Mallinson

I believe he could’ve stayed with Benetton, but asked for a crazy salary. He was going to get pummelled by Michael, so wanted to make it worth his while

In July 2024, Glenn posted on twitter about the start of the 1989 French GP. It made me think of the BBV10s question I've been mulling over for eleven seasons (I love, love, love the podcast – thank you! The 1997 season review series was utterly enjoyable). Some background: I discovered F1 in 1986 – as an Australian teenager – through a sports-roundup show on Saturday afternoons (Wide World of Sports). Alain Prost pushed his fuel-empty McLaren across the line at Hockenheim, and I was hooked. I was occasionally allowed to stay up on Sunday nights (or get up early on Monday mornings), thereafter, to watch races, live. The broadcast was the BBC relay; with intros and outros done by a local host (with no real F1 knowledge – he pronounced Berger, like the paint company: 'Ber-jerr') and Alan Jones (the former WDC, and not the right-wing nutjob radio host). Aside from the just-about-live races – or the highlights’ packages on the following Saturday - though, there was almost no F1 media in this country at the time; and, if there was, it was beyond my youthful/sheltered capacity to access. So… It is my recollection that when Mauricio Gugelmin raced for March – whenever Murray Walker or James Hunt spoke of him in commentary, it was as if he was a world champion in waiting. It was a huge shock to me (from my low-information perspective), when he disappeared from F1. Was his absence from the sport due to March folding? Did he have other options to stay in the sport, he didn’t take up? Have I been misremembering Murray and James encomiums, or were they simply mistaken in his talent? Thanks so much!

Leanne Genn

Not sure if it's been covered before, can we have analysis of the F1 Indoor Trophy held in a bologna car park from 1988 to 1996? Should F1 bring it back for the lowest teams in the championship, celebrate Luis Perez Sala's double win for Minardi, and of course Johnny Herbert's 1992 victory in heavy rain. There's some great videos of it on YouTube

Robin M

Had Peugeot gone ahead for their 1994 F1 project with Jean Todt as team boss, how good or bad would have that been? How long before the team folds and what happens to McLaren, Jordan and Ferrari in subsequent years?

Disc Infiltrator

If Nelson Piquet had been desperate to continue in F1 for 1992, did he have any viable options or offers?

Adam Brewer

You can extend any driver's contract at their current team by 1 year. Who would you choose and why? Personally I would like to see how Damon Hill would have got on in the 2000 Jordan haha

callum smith

What bet did Gary lose that had him designing a front wing for coloni? Or was it just his friendship with Roberto Moreno? Also how close to fruition was the Yamaha/Volvo deal and could that have meant arrows became a Stewart or jaguar B team since ford owned Volvo? Also what did Forti spend their remarkably big budget on in 1995 since the diniz money was more than what arrows and Minardi had to play with and does the panel agree with Edd's assessment that Diniz is overrated? Could march and simtek have come together at the end of 1993 as they would have given simtek an established race team and kept march going, especially since they were founded for the same reasons and wirth was at both.

Michael Maclean

If you made a car now to a previous set of regs say the ones from '97 using all the advances in knowledge and tech how much faster do you think it would be and what would be the limiting factors?
